To facilitate widespread acceptance by insurance companies and the general permies.
Dragon Technology is changing its name, from a rocket mass heater store to Montana Masonry Heaters!

Masonry stoves have been in use for hundreds of years in Europe.
In the USA, fire insurance is readily available for a Masonry heater.
Fire insurance is currently unavailable for an RMH except for the UL-listed Liberator stove.

Only certified stove mason can construct a Masonry stove in some states. (hopefully not your state)
In other states such as Montana, masonry stoves may be self-constructed as long as the International Residential Code (IRC) is followed.
Masonry Heater construction is addressed in section R1002 of Chapter 10 of the IRC, entitled “Chimneys and Fireplaces”.

If you want or require fire insurance, talk to your insurer ahead of time about the Masonry stove rules they accept.
Stress that this stove will only need to be lit once or twice a day, unlike a traditional box stove that burns nonstop from October through April or May.
Never use the words Rocket Mass Heater while talking to them.
With a little footwork to confirm each company's requirements, you can legally build and insure a masonry stove, formerly known as a Rocket mass Heater.

Be sure to check out the Dragon Technology Montana Masonry Heater store for all your supplies.

Come to the Missoula County Fair Aug.6th through the 11th to meet  Paul, Uncle Mud, and myself and learn all about MMHs and Permaculture!

Thomas, I'll be in touch with you later this year.  I'm still looking for my little patch dirt to live out the last of my days.  Once found, I'll need your help planning for a rmh for my new shelter.

Peace

Thank for the advice on not using the phrase ROCKET MASS HEATER. I’m so happy to have found this thread! Though my plan is to have an invisible to the eye home, I don’t want trouble when I file for insurance. Thanks and GOD bless!

This is wonderful news.  Thanks so much for posting your brainstorm, Thomas, and good luck with all your little dragons.

I have just checked Colorado’s statutes, and I don’t see anything about certified stove masons.
I will need to spend some time studying what is written and drawn to take it all in!  What I am thinking is that I could design the heater (or buy some plans), and use stovepipe after the “masonry.”
The particular section goes on and on about masonry chimney, but I don’t think it says it’s required.

It’ll take some studying, and luckily the property I have just bought is in a county with minimalist building codes.

Thomas, you may have updated the original already, but the logo text you show has an extra "A" in Masonry.

Best of luck in spreading the technology widely!
