I decided to make some modifications to the designs of rag rug looms that I had seen available for purchase or build so I
built this one.
My design turns the frame 90 degrees and has the warp span the short distance of a 2' x4' loom instead of the long distance.
This allows me to add legs (on the far side), place the loom on my lap, work comfortably from my body, then turn the project around (swap the legs), and keep weaving at a comfortable distance from my body.
The purchase list:
1 ea: 2"x3"x8' (can use 2x2)2 ea: 1"x2"x8'2 ea: 3" deck screws100: 1.5" finishing nails8 ea: 2" wood screws
My first build included a steel rod at each edge with the idea that it would help keep the selvage edge straight but that was not the case. It turns out that I pulled against the rod and the edges were not straight once removed from the loom. I've since made a couple of pieces without using the steel rods and the edges are much straighter.
Cut List:
2 ea: 2"x3"x55"2 ea: 1"x2"x27"2 ea: 1"x2"x30" (for legs - adjust length if needed)
Review this build as you complete the steps to build your own loom.
