My Electric Co-Op Magazine had a recipe for Strawberry Burfee.

This recipe was described as a wonderful easy treat.   The article also described Burfee as an Indian Dessert similar to fudge.  also known as burfi, barfi, barfee, or borfi.

Has anyone had this?

The recipe called for ingredients I don't have, strawberries. almond flour and coconut. So I search the internet for recipes for Burfee and came up with this recipe:

ingredients

1 (300 ml) can sweetened condensed milk
2 cups brown sugar, tightly packed
1 cup butter

I put everything into a pan and heated on med/low until the butter melted then mixed and cooked a few minutes.

Then I poured into a 8x8 pan, lined with parchment paper. Let cool in the fridge for about 3 hours.

Then I cut into squared.

This was a great treat, similar to Brown Sugar Fudge.

It is lovely stuff. I like the ones with a bit of cardamom and have bought it when we were near some good bakeries/restaurants. Most of the more "authentic " recipes I've seen will use ghee and some powdered milk but they are apparently more fussy and take longer.

Oh, burfee, yum!
My favorite is made with chick pea flour.
I have not tried this recipe, I get it at the Indian store.
But here it is, if you're short on strawberries and almond flour.

Not as intensely sweet as just sugar & milk & butter. Don't skip the cardamom.
I used to find a version that had been shaped by hand so you could see the imprint of the fingers and palm on the outside. I haven't seen those in a long time.

My, my, aren't you a big fella. Here, have a tiny ad:
