Finalizing  the construction of my 7 foot round door, and looking for 14 inch long construction screws...

There are a number of sources.

One quote is for 4.28 $ a piece =30 pieces 128.30 $

Another quote is for 8 $ a piece 27 will cost me 238 $

Then there is the on line option - 30 screws for 74 $ but needs minimum of 30 $ shipping.
Or 30 for 120 $

Still looking.

Hey Dave,
14" is a long screw!
Any chance you could work with a threaded rod and nuts?
At least over here (in Europe) that's often way cheaper. Of course also altering the design a bit because you have to go all the way through...

Look for screws with Torx heads, these long screws are quite common in europe and someone might stock them over there in the metric sizes

you're looking for 8x320mm

Thanks for the replies guys, yes they are a long screw !
There are multiple suppliers in this area, just going through the pricing to get the best deal.

For those of you who have been keeping up with my Hobbit Home build,

https://permies.com/t/180629/Hobbit-Home-Progress

I have been procrastinating with this door, since quite frankly - i was stuck.
2 thin layers of white steel glued to foam - no structure, nothing to fasten to - and as for trying to get a threaded rod straight through a 10 inch thick foam the first time - every time - not going to happen.

Friend of mine comes over the other day, and says - " white steel door - ugly as hell."
Why don't  you layer both sides with the same planks you have on the roof ?

So, that is the new game plan.  Will be posting pictures as i go, but since i am moving gravel 22 tons at a time, this will be  a side project.

Construction screws means that i can screw them in the first time, and they dont have to be perfectly straight !

With the arrival of the 14 inch screws, it is time to move the 1 3/4 x 5 inch planks into the house.

Built a frame, and leveled going to need more glue.

In an effort to get more done, trying to work an hour every day after work on the "project".

9 planks glued, 6 more left on the interior door blank.

Yet another challenge too building this door....

The interior wood panel is easy.... glue em all together, stand it against the wall, and cut out the round door face and attach.
Problem is, i am planning on making the EXTERIOR with a 6 inch trim piece around the outside of the door (matching door frame ? )  going to have to make it in 2 halves  - 1 piece will not fit through the door - so i would not be able to get it out of the house 😂😂.

Gotta love it .

The trim is mounted directly on the wood panels? You can't do the wood panels, then take it outside just to attach the trim?

But yes, building something without figuring out how to get it to where it needs to be is a BAD idea - particularly if it's heavy!

Making an 8x8 blank, cutting out the 6'6 " round for the face of the door  - then cutting out a 6 inch wide
" border" piece to attach to the outside of the house to frame the door.
When the door is opened, you will still see the wooden trim border, and it will cover the cut edges of the steel.

Are you thinking of making the exterior trim from the same glued-up t&g stock as the door? I think the trim would be much better running around the opening than cutting across it - end grain at the edge is asking for splinters, and it just doesn't look like a frame. A series of boards (maybe 8 or 12 or 16 of them) with ends angled to fit each other, and splined together and the inner edge cut to fit the door, would be a much nicer frame.

True.  This is the same way i built the round window, and my 6 foot cat exercise wheel.

See my videos on YouTube " you can do it dave " - use quotes or it does not come up.

This type of door frame may have to wait - till later in the construction phase as it is very time consuming.  Since i have the blank here, i can give the vertical planks a test run instead of throwing out the wood as scrap then replace later as needed.

Good idea.

Had a buddy come over on Sunday, and finished glueing up this inside door blank for the round door.
Monday, added side supports, and lifted it out of the way.  All set up for blank #2 outside frame.
8 x 8.5 feet square 1.75 inch thick.  It weights a bit 😁.

Working on the round door, and decided that the sides of the planks that are facing inwards do not need sanding, but do need 1 coat of urethane for moisture control.
Since no one will see this side of the planks again, 1 coat of urethane, construction adhesive, and i can screw it all together with 20 or 30 screws.  Set it up in the opening for the winter, and the 7 foot hole in my house won't  be so DRAFTY !
Going to need more urethane - 1 coat on the interior of each door used most of this can.

Next up, flip em both over and start sanding - then 3 coats on the exterior - 2 on the interior.

I admire your Hobbitarian ethic.
You seem to have solved your problem of screws, but Magard Tools in Prince George, B.C. sells them reasonably. 120.00CAD/40, plus shipping, for anyone else looking similar.
Maurice Gardy has retired, site is now Log Building Tools, everything for log/timber frame construction.
I bought a WoodlandMills 6inch PTO chipper from them. Maurice was a pleasant chap, Scott recently bought the business, and was the person I bought the machine from. Very helpful, excellent to deal with, therefore this plug.
There is apparently an earth berm greenhouse in my near future, Lil'B saw our neighbor's this spring and when told she had greens all winter, and it gets -35F here in interior B.C. every winter pretty much, I was told I was building one.
Worked as a carpenter off and on for more than 40yrs. I like wood and I like different. Good luck.

Thank you.
That is the main reason for this door....
Do i need a 7 foot round ? Heck no.
Do i need an R45+ front enterance door ? Code only requires R6 for a "high efficiency" rating, so no there as well.

But ... If i can pull it off, it will be a tourist attraction.

Note :
I have found out the white pine soaked up the first coat of spar urethane, like it wasn't even there - so a second coat is going on before flipping them over.

Welcome to Permies, Tommy. If Lil'B's happy with the new greenhouse and you want a nice Island holiday, I'd love to stand in line! My collection of sliding glass doors is dying to get put to good use, but I'm more a seamstress than a carpenter!

First attempt at bolt placement ( measure in 10 inch and place a nut )  did not look right, so i went with making a circle 12 inches in from the edge, and placing the nuts again.

After drilling pilot holes of where they will go, i can start sanding.

Thats one big Oreo cookie !

With the weather forecast calling for negative numbers overnight soon, need to get the front door hole closed in and insulated sooner than later.

Exterior door face sanded and 1 coat of urethane - bolt holes pre-drilled.

Realized that when i stand the round door up to fit into the hole, there is nothing for it too rest on, but the edges of the planks.
So, before the third coat of urethane goes on, drilled in the 22 - 14 inch screws, cut a 2x12 down to a full 2x10, and screwed it into place as a door base.
Third coat of urethane done !
Ready to temporarily install for the winter.

7 foot - R 50 - round door is in for the winter.
No hardware or hinges - just to keep the cold out.
Last window has also been framed, shimmed, leveled, plumbed and sprayfoamed.

Time for a rest.

With the door in place i have a much better idea for the 10 way adjustable, ball bearing hinges.
