permaculture singles forum

I suppose we'll see what sort of format evolves here.

I think the first thing folks should do is to start a new topic (aka, "new thread") that is all about you.  You might want to mention your part of the world in the subject line.

I think the big perk of this forum over other singles sites is that everybody here would have at least a passing interest in permaculture.

So ... normally I would post something to get things started, but I'm currently not looking.  So we need somebody to make the first post!

Hi, I'm Ken.

I'm 42, single, devastatingly handsome, sharp as a tack, and I can cook, too.
I was born and raised in Maine, studied physics and astronomy at a place called RPI, near Albany NY, and have been living it up in the sunshine state for the past 10 years.

I've been self employed for half of my adult life, cleaning services, rare coins, a candy company, and property management.  I currently hold employment at Reintjes Services as a foreman.  The money is good, the scenery changes, and we have an awesome set of power tools.

In my spare time I tinker with solar thermal, greenhouses, organic gardening, woodworking, keep chickens and worms, sculpting intricate shapes with my landscaping, cooking, baking, and canning.  I enjoy fine wines, baroque music, classic movies, and all things cotton.  I once had an awkward moment just to see what it was like.  I am in fact, the most interesting man in the world.

I'm not usually the kind of guy who goes for any sort of online dating thing, but to get the ball rolling in this forum I figured I could help get it started with my sense of humor.  Sometimes its a little dry but I just got out of work, got some
coffee into me and all that sugar has me kinda giddy.  Besides, the chickens are fed, its dark and cold outside and I had nothing better to do other than cook supper and do the dishes.  The dishes can wait.

I said I would join a singles forum, and here I am.  And I must say, this is the most complicated list I've ever seen.  Maybe that's why it's called a "forum" rather than a "list"  I will have to reread the directions several times before I can use all those cute smileys and other BBC stuff.

I am not in the NW part of the country, but rather in the beautiful Ozarks.  I have 154 acres...and creating a Permaculture design in the yard and developing small farm activities in another 20 or so acres.  Trying to make it as sustainable as possible...which to me means cycling the available nutrients and using local resources am much as possible.  This place has a spring fed creek and pond, and other springs trickling out of the hills.  It's got upland and bottomland, bluffs, trees and open pasture.

The PC design in the yard is going slowly, mainly because the yard is covered with Bermuda grass.  Is Bermuda grass in the Pacific Northwest???  It is all over the south and mid-south.  It does not till out or mulch out.  I am slowly killing it with black plastic that I move and remulch with cardboard and stick mulch.  I have made enough progress to stay motivated!

I have heritage turkeys, rare chickens, a few sheep, a milk cow and a few beef cows to raise and sell a few grass fed calves from...bees...lots of fruit trees and berries...and Border Collies to help with the work! 

I've got some alternative energy systems in place (solar) and hopefully more to come, and also rainwater catchment systems.

The only problem is that there are too many ideas and too much potential for one person to do alone...and that is why I am looking for someone (or two or three) to share the fun.  And I do mean that...it's not all work.  I'm old enough to want to stop and enjoy the progress...and old enough that I can't work all day like I used to!!!

I'd better stop for now, anyone interested can ask more questions.

Besides, I have to go feed the fire...we are renaming this area....SIBERIA.  we are bracing for a 100 year cold system that is almost here.  Usually even the winters are relatively pleasant! (I can graze animals all year)

I too am in the Ozarks.  I am at the top and I am thinking you are farther south.  I am recently married so this is not a pick up but a friendly "howdy neighbor". 

It sounds like you have quite a place/project...kudos!

It was nice to try and put together a singles page on this website, but judging from the majority of posts I've seen, either most people have never been on a singles website, or perhaps the format just isn't conducive to this type of thing.

Kudos for LoonyK for being the first (and surprisingly only) person to put himself out there with a legitimate singles post, and to a couple others just trying to connect.

It's off to a bit of a rough start, but it's encouraging to see folks diving in and talking to each other.

kahunadm, there's actually three folks with singles posts (threads) on here now:
- 'bamboo snow ninja' by LoonyK
- 'Male Alabama' by carryion
- 'Singles' Challenges' by Opportunity (a singles post AND a discussion topic me thinks).

Very cool. Maybe the subjects didn't make it totally obvious that these are singles posts. Each poster can edit their subject if they want, though I think permies like to do things a bit differently. 

Lisa and Leigh (bdswagger) posted replies to this thread that could probably be separate threads - their own singles posts. And even Jami posted posted a reply to the 'Social Lounge' thread that could be her own thread, but she said she's not looking right now. ( ?)

IMHO, there's a very supportive community here, and I think some folks are using English as a second language and that could be why there are a lot of spelling errors in the posts kahunadm mentioned. If you think about it, it's better to have some positive, conversation (even if it does contain some constructive suggestions) for the first posters than dead silence.

Speaking of suggestions, another thing that might help a lot is if people use first name and last name as their display/user name.

Permies are a different sort.  A commonality is an intense streak of independence.  Using a matchmaking site would go against the grain of some.  Perhaps you could explain to the good people what a "legitimate" post would consist of?

It aint been a week yet.  These things take time.  People will ease into it at their own speed.  You might want to back off as far as Rose, she has a good heart.

Permies are a "different sort?" I thought we were all still individuals, and that a "permie" is someone who took a PDC course, practices, or in some way relates to the topic of permaculture.  Other than that, we can come from all walks of life and vary from one another in myriad ways (as well we should).  Celebrate diversity, right?  Do I have an intense streak of independence Ken?  Maybe...maybe not, and by whose standard(?)...yours?  How can someone even venture to guess if they've never met the other person?  And using a matchmaking site might go "against the grain" to some, but perhaps not others.  Was it wrong of me to throw that out as an option?  Have you ever visited the EWSingles site?  I've corresponded with several individuals on that site and found them to be engaging, friendly, and loving people that all shared many of the interests that I suspect are espoused by most on this site.  Regarding the use of the word "legitimate," my point was that it seemed only a small percentage of the posts were even written with the intent of saying "here's a little about me, and here's the type of person (or people) I'd like to connect with."  I assume most people have at least browsed a singles site before, so I don't feel I should have to provide any additional explanation as to what I was inferring by use of the term "legitimate," although I admit a better word should have been chosen to convey my intent.
I am a little surprised by the response to my original (unedited) post.  I tried to make it obvious that I was only dismayed by the observation that someone was apparently opening themselves up to others in a way they felt best expressed themselves (an endeavor that can leave some feeling vulnerable)...and got critiqued on it (well intended or not).  I don't know who knows whom on this site, who is serious, who is just poking fun at their friends, etc., but was only attempting to stand up for someone that I thought made a heartfelt attempt at taking this new "singles" forum seriously. 
I apologize to those who were unable to see my intent by the way I worded my concerns.

Dungeon Master? Although that is on my to-do list, the DM is for Del Mar (the beach town I grew up in down near San Diego).  I've been a west-coaster up until a couple years ago, and even lived in Alaska (for a summer).  Also spent time in Portland, Eugene, Monterey, Napa Valley, and San Luis Obispo (central Cal).  Now I have ventured inland (spent a year in Missoula, but never met Paul) and currently call Colorado home.  I haven't really laid down any roots here however, and could see myself venturing back to the Pacific NW someday.  Then again, I also am a traveler at heart, so I feel at home in many places.  I enjoy getting outdoors (hike, bike, or water), the occasional brewpub social gathering, and would like to get started on a sustainable homestead once I find that choice piece of land...maybe someplace that could double as a demonstration site/teaching facility/retreat where others could come and get away from it all, share ideas, learn, grow, relax, have fun....all that good stuff.  Oh yes, I did take an interest in this forum as I too am single...and I would love to connect with others and if that perfect match exists, I'm all for it!

Where do you currently call home?  ...anyplace you've dreamed of living or would like to return to someday?

I am happily living my dream in the Missouri Ozarks.  If you are close to Burlington CO check out 4 mile gaited horses...maybe just the place to start proving theries.  Talk about needing de-desertification.  I will be there this spring to tame some horses.

Are you a horse whisperer?  Will you be taming them for someone else, or taking them back with you?

I have been called that before.  I will tame as many as I can find the time for and then haul some home too.  We have like 1800 acres and 300 horses out there.  Way too much for me, though I would like to have just one of the windmills here.

This thread has been read 337 times and it hasn't been up very long. 

And the other threads in this forum have a huge read count.

I think that means that there are a lot of people coming by and having a look.

300 horses and 1800 acres?  Wow...must be nice!  Were you serious about trying out a "greening of the desert" project on a portion of that land?  I'm sure there are several projects underway in the "dust bowl" states, but it would be very satisfying to be involved with one from the ground up.

Wish you could take a windmill back with you.  Are the things just huge or what?  Could they be disassembled, or would it be more cost and effort that it's worth?

I am not the ultimate decision maker but can make suggestions and be heard.  I would love to see it happen.

Maybe while I am there I can find a windmill out of use and aquire. They are in use to water stock on the ranch.

You know, I figured out why I like the single forum-because people tell you who they ARE, and what they are doing! That's awesome! And even what region they're in so maybe you won't feel like the only permie in the wilderness!

the Fonts are microscopic and really needs a way to adjust the Text

the very first thing about a Singles Personal Board is that their should be only Singles here...  the other thing that works is GIRLS ! 

If yuo candivide the Group into Geographic sections woutl be a wonderful start,,,,  also you need to use Moer Off the Grid Keywords so poeple loking for Off the Grid can find your Group.... 

the one thing really lacking in Permaculture and Off the Grid LIving,,,  is there is no place to connect with anyone....  more effort needs to be put into this.......

Call me crazy, but divided by region would be nice as well. I personally will not move to a cold area and I'd bet there are many who wouldn't want to leave the geographical area they are now in - maybe because of their kids or aging parents.

What is the opposite of deja vu?  Ever re-read a post you made and feel deeply suspicious it was actually you??  Did I really use the word stultify???

PS I am still looking... I am 50, female and in the UK.  And I never, or almost never, use the word stultify.

Please tell us your still having fun!! Can we come?.. Male, female 30's wanderers.. Been traveling together for awhile, want to find a hidden place, away from society constraints that we can call home...love to work the land, we both do!!
