Can someone please tell me how to post a YouTube video - so that the video (not just the link TO the video) shows up in the post? I've tried every which way and now I'm getting frustrated....
Staff note (Jocelyn Campbell):

My routine goes something like this.

Go to youtube video.
Copy paste the link on top of the page.
Click youtube button and paste link into the box.
Hit preview.
Cuss a while.

Go back to youtube.
Click 'share'.
Copy the conveniently highlighted link, click youtube button in reply, paste link, hit preview.
Cuss a load more.

Click the name of the person who posted the youtube video. Search desperately on their site until you find the video. Cope the link location and see if it is any different to any of the ones you already have. If so, copy and paste that into the box.
Hit preview.
Cuss till you're blue in the face.

Experiment with all versions of the link you have adding and taking away 's' everywhere you can think of.

Try searching for keywords in the youtube search engine and see if anything different shows up.

Make yourself a nice cup of tea.

Repeat all previous steps several times.

At some point, for no known reason, one of the links will work. Usually.

Hope this helps.

It sure helped me letting it all out...

...yeah....got stuck at the cussing stage!! Was about to move on to the making tea stage when I realized I'd been trying "copy the link" from the video and not the link at the top of the page. Which WORKED!

Sanity (temporarily) saved!

A thousand thanks!

Just don't let it lull you into a false sense of security. It won't work like that every time. Youtube likes to keep you on your toes. And the caffeine.

Here is a very helpful tip :

Apparently you cannot use a https address . So if your video has that address and after you paste it onto your post , edit it by removing the "s" in https . Make it read http. Like so :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4zRe_wvJw8&list=PLkbZ15enlqDc-SSLoANo-3ey0cwyW7pwu
{Will not embed}

{Edited to http by removing the "s"}

Eureka ! Many thanks to Jaikaran Pai !

Good news!  There have been some updates, both at YouTube and at permies.com which makes this easier!

As an example, here is the full link from a YouTube music video that I copied:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4W9VYY5QpLg

In the 'Reply' or 'New Topic' screen, there is a grey, Youtube (or Vimeo) button at the top (these are in the desktop view only) for making an embedded video:

--click the YouTube button
--a pop-up window asks for the URL
--paste in the URL (see my full link above as an example)
--click OK

Easy-peasy! Here's what you get:

Now, on a mobile device, or if you click "Share" on YouTube, you get a shorter URL, in this case:  https://youtu.be/4W9VYY5QpLg

Again, using the permies YouTube button, it still works! (Thanks permies.com dev team for fixing this!!) See:

If you're in the mobile view of permies, and don't have the YouTube button, simply type:
""at the start of the YouTube URL
and
"" at the end of the YouTube URL
no spaces and no "(quotation)" marks of course, and note the square brackets.

Hope that helps!

Now even a longer URL, like Wayne's example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4zRe_wvJw8&list=PLkbZ15enlqDc-SSLoANo-3ey0cwyW7pwu

This will now also embed without any editing! Yay dev team! So, go ahead, copy the link (or the Share function), or copy the URL at top - they all work!
