Hello!

My husband and I are about to have our well dug. Ideally we want to put a solar well pump in and a hand pump for back up in the same hole. Has anyone out there done this? If so how did it go for you, any recommendations on the process?

Our well will probably be about 150 feet down.

Thanks!

search youtube for user "engineer775" Lots of good info on just that.

It depends on the size of your well casing, but worst case you can put the solar pumphead on the top of the simple or buffalo handpump--that will work in a 2" casing. But that is only one pump with two power sources, if the pump seals fail you are out until fixed. If you have a larger casing, it usually is not that difficult to fit both--you just have to be careful about the order you install/uninstall them.

Check valves AND full-flow ball valves between each pump and the pressure tank.

Check out Jim's post dated SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2012 "On our deep well hand pumps" here: Woodhenge Blog.

I saw his pump and it was a durable, elegant solution. He also has some other recommendations. As I remember it is designed to be shared with another pump in the same well.

Every plan is a little cooler if you have a blimp. And a tiny ad.
