Does anybody know of any good sources of seed for doing landrace/breeding work in Australia. I have a few landraces I have already been growing for a few years based on commercial seeds and from UsefulSeeds in Bendigo but im finding it impossible to find seed for more exotic things such as promiscuous tomatoes, True potato and true sweet potato seed. I Have tried to order internationally but with the strict border security this isn't really an option.

please help

I wish I had some suggestions for you but I do not have experience with obtaining seeds in Australia.

Perhaps the Permies Seed/Plant Review Grid might have some suggestions?

I hope you can find new sources to help build new landraces.

I've been wondering about ways around those sorts of policies. Like, what if I sold hand-made paper and one of the ingredients in that paper was seeds? Or maybe a rattle made by filling a dried gourd with seeds? Can you import art-paper and percussion instruments? (After all, who would ever have guessed that you'd ruin these objects so that you could plant the seeds?!?) Or maybe someone who grows promiscuous tomatoes could sell sun-dried tomatoes internationally (that just happen to still have the seeds)?

Hi Matt,

Welcome to Permies.  We have a number of members from Australia. Hopefully, one of them can provide input.

Hi Christopher,

Importing Organic material is also very difficult for things such as wood and paper, if they even are allowed across the border they are irradiated to kill seed and diseases. The dried tomato idea would probably work but it would need to be from a proper company with a license and not a backyard grower. (It would probably be easier for a seed company to get a photosanitary report than a license to send food items into Australia.)

Hello Christopher I've found https://www.edenseeds.com.au/ helpful and also my friend swears by:-
https://www.diggers.com.au/collections/australian-heirloom  and I've also dealt with:-
https://allrareherbs.com.au/  mostly for dye plant seeds.  Actual plants may be a problem, because the internal regulations get in the way once again - "not shipped to WA or Tasmania"  etc. but packets of seeds should be OK. Even "Mr Fothergills" seeds have heirloom and organic varieties.

asked Christopher Weeks
Short answer only if you agree to pay to have it irradiated* to kill any potential hitch-hiking pests and/or diseases. No exceptions.
*gamma radiation

My painted mountain flour corn seeds are sold by Gatherer Forager Farm - they sell a lot of their own seeds as well, which they grow organically.

https://www.gathererforager.com/

I don't think the term landrace seeds is used much here. There probably are people doing some landrace stuff, but not aware that they are doing it.

A few other seed places I have bought seed from and had good results:
Diggers club
The seed collection
Eden Seeds
The Lost Seed
Seed Freaks (I think they are no longer selling online though)
