You can customize how the recent topic shows on desktop via your profile. I don't know if all the views have their wrinkles ironed out. Here is the one I use.
Go to edit profile (via circle top right)
Site Personalization
Default view on the home page
And choose: recent topics full width
Save changes
...
There are further customization options in the pie features section in edit profile. Like keeping track of what threads you've read.
