This has been happening pretty often lately.  When you look at a thread under recent topics, if the thread goes more than one page, it has the little page numbers.  Recently, when I click on a page number, it still takes me to the very beginning of the thread.  It just happened to me again now.  I took a picture of the topic.  When I click on the little "2" to start at page 2, it still takes me to the beginning of the thread on page one.  It doesn't happen all the time, just intermittently.

I just tried this one and it did the same thing.  I clicked on page 4, and it took me to the beginning.  I only tried twice but it happened both times.

I've been experiencing the same thing, for what seems like a week at least. I miss this.

I've been experiencing it for months but, at least for me, it's random and hard to pin down.  It is on a list to be looked at but any troubleshooting or insights people have would be very helpful.

I understand it depends on your PIE and what view you are in.

I'm using recent topics full width - because they said they were taking recent topics away one day soon and this is a good substitute.

You can choose different views, then when you find one you like, go to "my profile" and set that as default.

Weird..  So the page it goes to when you click on the little page number is related to the view you have your forum browsing set to?

If someone can get this issue to be repeatable, how about testing R's idea?

I don't believe anything has been pinned down or figured out.  Next time it happens to me, I'll report it here and hopefully it will be duplicateable.  If anyone else sees it please test it by repeating it a few times and then post here so others can attempt the same click.

I get the impression that Devaka is thinking about looking into some of the simpler things.   This could be one for him to look into - but we would first need to be really clear on the problem.

This link is #11 in the "Advice on a RMH..." thread. It consistently takes me to page #1.  All my profile views appear to be set to "Default".

It may be worth getting input from somebody for whom the page numbers _do_ work. They could "copy link" for the page number (other than #1) and post here; maybe a couple of page numbers. Then look at the "Status Bar" on their browser while hovering the pointer over  different page #'s and see if different pages display different links (in the Status Bar of their browser).  I don't know how the page scripting works, but it would _seem_ the different page number buttons would need to point to different links...

A quick guess without testing:   it is related to the green line.

Thanks Rufus, that particular thread does work correctly for me.  Your link takes me to the first page of the thread but when I click on the little page numbers from the RMH forum it works.

Page 2 link:
https://permies.com/t/40/122458/Advice-RMH-build-Hokkaido-Japan

Page 10 link:
https://permies.com/t/360/122458/Advice-RMH-build-Hokkaido-Japan

When I hover it also shows the post number for the page.  There must be 40 posts per page, thus the 40 on page 2's url and 360 for page 10.

I just tried the one Trace had issues with "biochar vs hugelkultur" and it works correctly for me.  Trace, if you're watching this thread, could you test the hover like Rufus suggests?

When I go to the link I posted above (the "...advice..." thread) the page numbers now work. I can see the different links shown on the status bar and following them goes to the correct page.

Nothing has changed here, far as I know. Not sure what Paul meant about the "green line".

Mike, I did do that before I started this thread, and when I hovered, the same link appeared, not different ones, so it made sense it was taking me to the same page no matter which one I clicked.

It just happened to me on the "Tractors" thread that is at the top of the screen.  I took one capture while hovering over page one.  I took the next capture while hovering over page four.

I just found my way to that tractor thread and the page numbers appeared correctly in the little preview url.  This is really nebulous...

Was that tractor thread at the very top of the forum when you had your issue?  Yes, I'm grasping at straws...

It was at the very top of the forum, but when I have had the issue in the past, it was with threads in various places.

This is a PIE-only feature that you can set in your profile. Basically, it leaves a marker to tell you where new posts are in a thread. Say you visited a thread when people had made 20 posts. It would put a green line after the 20th post. Say 44 more people post, and you go back to the thread. You'd have a line after the 20th post (even if you'd only read to post 10), and you'd be able to more easily see where the newer posts are. It's often really handy.

I've never used that feature myself and I've experienced this clicking issue.  So unless having the green line in the program can mess up people without it activated, I don't think that's it.

I'm mostly pie-poor and have never encountered the green line. Sounds useful, but it's not part of my normal visits here.

And I have encountered the page# link problem many times on various threads in all positions on the Recent screen. Guessing I first noticed it last summer, but maybe it was last spring. Not a new phenomenon. But that does not mean the green line scripting gets a pass.

The following is based on big open ended assumptions and I have no idea how much of the page building scripts you actually control. But what the heck.  FWIW.

Place some test code into the page building script where it inserts the line items into the page? The test code squeals into a test file when it finds a page#link-1 = page#link-2; plus date, time, and any other data, like indexes, that might be interesting.

Alternatively, place test code into the script where the page#links are generated. That would be harder because you'd need to decide what to monitor, which piece of data could be used to catch a problem. Or it might be a damn royal pain if the page#links are generated in several different places in the page building script(s).

Cheers,
Rufus

I've never used the green line feature either. I didn't know it existed until this thread.
