I keep potatoes in buckets in the cellar, but a small container is in the kitchen. Some of our "counters" are stainless steel restaurant tables so that we can wheel them around and reconfigure out kitchen depending on the chores, and I keep taters in a bucket, bowl, or milk crate under one of the shelves (which can be set to any height). I keep onions in a hanging basket in the middle of the room next to the island and above our trash-can. That's probably not the best place for them but we go through them so fast it's not usually a problem. Beets and carrots go in a fridge-drawer. Sweet potatoes go with the potatoes.
