I've always been a bit dubious about the xylitol type sweeteners. The reason they can give you diarrhea is, I believe, that you don't usually have the right gut bacteria to break them down so they stay in the gut and hang on to any liquid they can on the way. The reason they are used as sweeteners is that they are like sugar, but, as you don't break them down, they don't release their calories.
You can buy them as laxatives, but, from experience with the old man, I can tell you that they don't work if you use them frequently.
You can by 'sugar free' chocolate, which, as a hypoglycemic, I occasionally treat myself to. It has exceedingly laxative effects *so long as I have it no more than once a week*. If I have it more than that, no laxative effect at all. Why not? I presume that my gut bacteria are adapting to the presence of the sweetener and breaking it down. If they can do that, surely it means that although I don't suffer the unpleasant laxative effect, it's going to release a whole load of unwanted calories/carbs that I could do without.
I'm too addicted to chocolate to cut out the occasional treat every now and then, but there's no way I'd use xylitol type sweeteners on a daily basis.
