They are awarded for helpful, insightful, delightful, interesting ... posts. They mean we are smart, sexy and part of the in crowd. I may hold the record on lost apples. That usually means that I hold an unpopular opinion or that someone in power doesn't share my sense of humor.

Apples are a means of rewarding forum members who have gone above and beyond typical participation, and for those who have performed special projects for Permies.com.
They are also a means of awarding special recognition for posts that offer keen insight, specialized knowledge, are especially helpful or motivating.

Well Done.

All staff have a supply of them to bestow as they see fit.

Sometimes we miss a totally awesome post - if you think something apple-worthy has slipped through the net, hit the report button and tell us.

Pollinators are able to give away an apple a day.

Volunteers are able to give away three apples a day.

Stewards are able to give away unlimited apples a day.

What exactly does "pollinator", "volunteer" and "steward" signify?
I mean, how do you become one of these, or who are these people, generally?
Volunteer should be straight forward probably but I've seen forums where the titles themselves don't mean much other than the user's forum post count (more posts mean a higher, "better" title).

Edit: and I see Burra Maluca has "Mother Tree"... I like the title; it has a nice sound/feel. But what does it mean?

Staff can pick pollinators. Basically, it's a title upgrade that comes with some small benefits.

"Volunteer" is like "volunteer tomato". A volunteer is selected by the staff and has staff superpowers, which includes the ability to delete posts and approve name changes.

"Steward" has all of the volunteer superpowers, plus a bunch more system superpowers. A steward is selected by current stewards making suggestions to Burra.

Click on the link in Burra's signature. It has a wonderful explanation of Mother Tree.
