What does the apple next to my name mean?

I see an apple next to my name and also next to other people's name with a number in it.
What is the purpose of it?

the apple means that a steward thought something you posted was of especially high quality. consider it a crude measure of your reputation here.

And the number in the apple is where we land on the ecowheaton scale?

It is possible for a person to write one post and five of the staff like that post. So there are five apples for the one post.

Each of "the 94" have been given ten apples.

It can be viewed in many ways. One is to help the staff find future staff. Another is that when reading a thread, one might place more value in the words of somebody with 30 apples than the words of somebody with zero apples.

It is a new feature. Let's see how things go over the next few months.

Cool idea. This helps to lend credibility to ones thoughts.

not at the moment. the thinking is that it may be more effective if folks don't know which posts earn apples. the thumbs up feature also covers that territory to some extent.

I like the idea. Its another level of feedback, transparency and organic growth.

Maybe if we post some really good ideas, or share permies.com with friends (facebook/etc), or support pauls advertising fund, we can "maybe" get some more apples.

What about awarding rotten apples for bad behaviour or incredibly silly ideas. Or suppose a seemingly great idea is posted and awarded an apple followed by a barrage of evidence against its implementation. Big bites could be taken from the apple until only a core remains. This could be a sort of blood sport. Highly entertaining but I imagine that some would simply take their basket and go home.

Edit: I just picked up an apple. Does that mean that this post got it or was I rewarded for one of my MANY BRILLIANT, WELL WRITTEN PAST POSTINGS. : I fear that my best days may be behind me and would like to IMMEDIATELY recieve a truck load of apples or I plan to pout. ---- Would I be punished if I were to take a picture of a bushel of apples and post it whenever I quote something I'm fond of. Or I could write big long winded pontifications and immediately award myself a truck load of apples.

I think a tracking mechanism is needed if we are to truly love those who give apples and hate those who take bites away. I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight while knowing that some bozo may receive an apple for sucking up or for posting a really bone headed idea, while my own valiant efforts and dry wit may go unrecognized.

I hope people don't start to self edit so heavily that Paul no longer feels compelled to dole out an occasional public spanking. I don't mind missing out on stuff that is plain silly, but sometimes the truly bizarre may be stifled and that would be a shame.

Perhaps we could all earn apples that we may dole out to deserving members or we could hit the “rot” button and then deliver them to the object of our scorn in a sort of electronic "drive by fruiting." The brave would also hit the “trace” button so that everyone could see who threw the rotten apple.

I recall that once or twice our glorious leader has said to be nice. That little rule might have to go, if this apple thing is carried to its logical conclusion. “FRUIT FIGHT” !!!

I see that three "lucky" members have more than ten apples each while many have none at all. I'll bet that many proponents of redistribution would like to run off with those full baskets and pass them out willy nilly. Or they could state firmly that nobody really needs more than 15 apples, so let's draw the line there. Do you guys approve this. How would you modify this.

Another nice addition would be:
A way to show that I am a rising star 19 post/share/etc in the last 24 hours (red apples with 2points) vs a now 1/month, poster/share/referal old hero (brown apple with 79points).

The apple giving should focus mainly on who brings in new permies and also a little on good replies esp to new members.

This is just being rolled out.
I am sure the all the 94 will get their apples momentarily.

Maybe we should have a breakdown of 3 fruits hidden deep in the profile/somewhere page.
So that people think that it is fair,
Red apples for good replies to new members.
Purple Plums for facebook/etc shares.
Greenbacks for those who contribute 10cents to pauls advertising funds.
OK greenbacks are not technically a fruit.

I just discovered the leader board which is the pie in the sky scoreboard for apple acquisitions. According to it, the current leader is one Cassie Rauk. These stats show that this new member has yet to post anything. I suspect a bad apple has set up a test to see if anyone would notice. Here are his/her impressive stats.

Cold hard cash baby. I think he should have been given greenback not apples.
Or maybe that is ok. That just means that I can pay to Paul's advertising fund like him and move up, And I see that just as important as "preaching to the regular converts here at permies.com

It would be kinda nice to hijack or piggyback on the whole farmville crowd.

Instead of calling "bullshit" when unsupported "evidence" is cited, try to turn it down a notch and say to yourself --- "HORSE APPLES". You'll feel much better. Just think it, don't write it down. The be nice rule still stands.

Rules of etiquette are often relaxed during snowball fights. Here's a money maker. Sell rotten apples for say $10 per bushel and then occasionally relax the nice rule so that they can be slung with impunity. Publish stats after the event. On Christmas or Valentine's Day, sell good apples or pies that may be awarded to the deserving. On Halloween, switch to pumpkins.

Remember Sleeping Beauty ? A fun way to deliver a spanking would be to award a poisoned apple which would disable that member's submit button for a few days.

I have a fence that needs whitewashing. It's great fun to paint a fence. I'll trade you three apples for the privelage.

I'm sure there's room for William Tell and Johnny Appleseed as well.

Or the Greek guy who harvests from the tree of life, or the Norse apples that impart eternal life, or the Celtic guy who ate an apple which lasted a year or the unemployed doctor whose patients have all started eating apples. I have not posted anything because most of my newbie questions can be a answered by looking through old posts. I am however one of the 94 and have taken a lot of my spare time over the last month or so to help Adrien by doing podcast summaries.

I am the one who granted the apples to Cassie. She has been awesome helping with the podcast and with the book summaries. Her work was impeccable and did not require me to do any editing, so it saved me time and I could focus on other tasks for the Empire! Thanks Cassie.

Bart Glumineau also helped with the podcast summaries and got an apple. Paul Gutches helped with some wonky html and got an apple. Eivind helped with the podcast too and got two apples. Now I hope I did not forget anybody.

For the 94 who don't have apples yet, it is simply because you used a different email address with Scubbly than the one you use at Permies. Send me a PM with the address you used at Scubbly and I will grant apples.

Thanks for the heads-up. I've listened to all of the podcasts. I must offer praise for Paul. Over the past year, I've noticed that Paul has continued to examine the 3rd ethic. I have had similar issues with the 3rd ethic, and I appreciate that he is willing to consider us as part of his community.

More than you know. The other day, I thought it might be fun to bring it up again just to see if Adrien would award you another apple. So, it was a bit of a sociological experiment. I don't have any way of knowing who added the apple and I'm sure they did it in recognition of your hard work with those reviews. But the timing may have been influenced by it being brought up. Who knows, if I had complained bitterly about the desparity between my basket and yours, the all powerful stewards might have taken away my apple and awarded you five more. i thought it might be soem sort of rep system, my comments are thus:
1) i think it is an amazing idea, many other forums have rep systems but this is unique in that you are not just awarded rep because another member was drunk and thought you made the most hilarious post ever, but you are awarded rep, or brownie points, if you will by the sites administrators and such meaning that the post will likely only be +rep'd for things of value or that help the site, i should say i like this idea and must give kudos to those who came up with it

2) i personally dont think that the apple, as it stands, makes the best image for added reputation as it sorta looks "tacky" to me with the box around it and such (no offense meant by this, just meant to be constructive criticism) and the red apple doesnt seem to match the sites overall color scheme

that being said i understand that taking that image as opposed to making a cleaner image or whatever is much simpler and given what is all going on with paul life (i cant say i know as much about other staff members since i dont listen to podcasts about how things are going with them) and just how much i sometimes dont feel like spending an hour making something look pretty if it can be perfectly functional in ten minutes, so with the criticism and all, i have to finish saying i do like the new feature, good job guys:)
