I am a member of the organizing committee (three of us on the committee have our PDC) of The Permaculture Living Lab, a project that "broke ground" in August 2014 on the campus of the State University of New York at Oswego. We started with a destroyed 3/4 acre former quad that had been transformed to a construction vehicles parking lot. (Think compaction. Huge vehicles.) After the vehicles were moved off, the site was graded and left to us. Utilizing student volunteers, we removed the large rocks and covered the soil (and here I use that term loosely) with 3 - 4 " of
compost, a gift from the city of Oswego. (They chip and compost old Christmas Trees, tree trimmings, yard waste, etc.) After that we covered the compost with cardboard (shhh) and followed that with a thick layer of wood chips to hold down the cardboard, according to the model set by the UMass Amherst permaculture garden. The campus is on the shore of Lake Ontario and can be very windy. End of the semester we ran out of volunteers and had to save the planting for the spring. We plan on using the site for instruction (what else on a college campus, eh?) and will be holding a variety of workshops there. We are inviting faculty, students and community to participate in designing the site and letting us know what they would like to see there.
