Have you seen the Ground Fridge? What do you think of the concept?

It looks interesting, but quite pricey.

Also, one of the diagrams shows it being plumbed into mains water - using the flow of cold water to keep the unit cool perhaps? This instantly strikes it out for true off grid applications.

For the same money you could install a nice photovoltaic power setup. Enough solar power to run 20 fridges.

German to this issue is '' The Spring House " For most homesteaders this was one of the first 'improvements' made Natural refrigeration down to 44ºƒ -ish !

If I lived in a tornado region and was already installing an underground shelter, I could see making modifications to give the shelter an additional function. As others have pointed out, $16,000 (plus install costs?) for a single use structure would be quite pricey.

I agree...very spendy. The spring house would be great..as long as a person doesn't dig an area that would cut off the spring while putting it in.

Gypsy B. : Yes I totally agree! Safe Spring Development is truly a lost art ! I would love for this subject to blossom as an entire thread of its own !

Cleaning out the spring at the point it 1st leaves the ground and maintaining the spring hour over it is itself loaded with danger !

Geoff Lawton on the other hand points out that often all that is needed to develop a spring on your property is the dynamic use of Swales, catch basins,
and clever overflow areas to feed downslope water tables !
