I grew up on a traditional family farm, but wasn't able to save it. I'm a research junkie figuring out how best to reach my self-sufficient goals- utilizing ideas from
Joel Salatin,
Bill Mollison, and
Mark Shepard, with heavy emphasis on keyline design.
I had a place for a few years where I was able to garden again, and I had poultry, milked goats, and made
dairy products and preserved veg. I'm very interested in nutrition and natural medicine and am currently experimenting with Sandor Katz' "The
Art of Fermentation." ISHTA yoga methodology is part of the plan as well, a deeper understanding of the body for whole body healing. After that, self-taught massage therapy and acupressure will be the focus. Mostly though, I'd like to give back to the community with any abundance my place can offer.
I don't have much hands-on
experience with natural building- none, in fact, but I've done my homework. I know that I'm looking for a place with mountains and at least the potential of running
water. The exact location isn't set in stone yet, but I'm searching for a place with all four seasons where I can put up a
cob house and substantial outbuildings for livestock. I am currently a helicopter mechanic in Alaska, with
roots in the lower 48, just up here saving money for my place. I'm also trained in marine diesel and gas maintenance, as well as 3phase power generation. I'm feeling pretty confident in being able to rig up most of the more permanent... conveniences, shall we say. Shouldn't be much more than a year or two here before I have the funds to make it happen.
Only problem is, I have had little luck in finding like-minded individuals, and that's why I'm here. If these ideas resonate with you, let me know- I'd love to have somebody with whom to bounce around ideas. I could be interested in a small community situation, with the right people. And of
course, finding a great guy who has similar interests and goals would be icing on the cake.
