Seeking non-tobacco smoking, honest and hard-working handy person or couple to live free of rent and utilities in exchange for help on the farm. Hopefully you're like-minded, preferring healthy, organic, green-natural living....We have a small, fairly self sufficient homestead farm in lovely rolling hills and pine
trees (6K elevation) east of Denver with turkeys,
chickens, pigs,
rabbits, milk-goats, tons of kitties. We're offering a small but nice private 1 bedroom apartment with separate entrance, parking, kitchen and bath also private screened in porch and backyard which still needs landscaped this summer and will soon feature a private hot tub. Cigarettes are NON-NEGOTIABLE but 420 is welcome, and you may grow within legal limits with our help. We provide all tools and supplies plus great internet/landline, cable TV, power backup, etc. Includes personal storage unit and chest freezer. Free fresh organic food in season such as eggs, bread, yogurt,
milk, cheese, herbs and vegetables in exchange for animal care and
gardening chores. You may raise animals within reason as you like, and engage in hobbies that need space as we have plenty on 9.5 acres.
Us: in our 50's, stable, husband works full time in town as computer nerd technical manager. I'm an RN when not managing farm full time. Normal, practical, generally calm, decent, people. Very hard working and goal oriented (read: get the farm finished!) but enjoy our fun, too. Farm recreation area includes off-grid guest tiny tree house, disc golf, ladder ball, horseshoes, target practice, etc......I'm skilled at every aspect of cooking and
food preservation, including drying, canning, cooking, baking, pickling, curing etc....Massive organic garden. Given time we make our own beer and hooch. Many skills to share and many opportunities to learn and grow out here. There's plenty of room for working on your vehicles, hobbies and animals. We've also begun working on building tiny homes and hope to help our helpers make money at that at this year. There's plenty of
local work needed as people can't get good help out here in the boonies, so you can easily earn decent money right near the farm if you have the right work ethic and skills.
You: You're trustworthy, responsible, emotionally and personally stable, handy/experienced at a variety of handy things such as electric, plumbing and carpentry, etc. Willing to do what it takes during the on seasons, (carpentry, weeding, fixing, etc, while knowing you get to relax a lot in the winter.) You like knowing where your food/weed came from and how it lived. You like a challenge and figuring things out while working independently with your hands. You like animals and will take good care of ours. You're excited about not having to pay any rent (worth a lot in Colorado this year as you likely already know!) but that isn't the only motivator, you're just as interested in living the organic, self-reliant clean-air life that goes with that free rent. You're genuinely interested in conserving/managing resources like
water, raising all organic food, and learning to be self sufficient while eating well. Hopefully you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle in good running condition or close to it, and if you have kids they're either grown or no more than one well behaved child as there simply isn't room for more in the apartment. You don't have a ton of bills or in-town responsibilities weighing you down. If your past was less than squeaky clean it was a long time ago and you've learned from it and moved on. You're interested in staying at least until Thanksgiving but might like to live here long term.
The deal: 9.5 acres in small heavily treed subdivision 1 hour from downtown Denver. Neighbors near but not on top of you. Very nice scenery, looks and feels just like living in the mountains. Farm got mostly finished this year, but still has a short, mildly ambitious
project list to finish before winter:
Root cellar entrance repair, deck and barn painting, finish mudroom interior,
yard landscaping, insulate garage, erect
greenhouse kit, and enlarge goat pasture fencing are most of it. (Not too bad really.) There's
enough to keep busy until Thanksgiving, after which we all plan to relax. After that list the farm's finally done and life will be relatively easy ever after, mostly just animal care and
gardening. As for smoking cigarettes, we've had people be less than truthful and it's never worked out well, so please, if you smoke regular tobacco, don't apply and don't get mad at me for requiring it. There are very few rules out here, and that's the hardest one, given to you right up front, no hedging or BS about it. The last couple stayed here well over a year, did a lot of great work for us, and are only leaving because of family issues, they loved it out here and you could too!
If genuinely interested, write back and tell me some things about you and why you really want to do this. We usually get a lot of responses, so actually giving info other than just your name and phone number will get a response back. If you get no response in a couple days, it may just be that we didn't get your mail which happened in the past with some good people, so just write to us again.
