Americans are fascinated by caffeine.  It's usually either a coffee or soda fix.  There is a drink that is widely unheard of, and just might be the solution that many of you are looking for.

This WONDERDRUG is called Yerba Mate.  It's generally drank as a tea, but it is a relative of a Holly.  This is an ancient ceremonial tea from South America.  Nearly 75% of households drink Yerba Mate in certain South American countries.  Like any claim, you need to try this elixir for yourself.

I found mate because I am a loose leaf tea fan.  After my aunt bought me an entire bag of loose tea, I fell in love.  I was never a fan of coffee, and falling for tea made it even worse.  I forget how I found mate initially, but i was hooked when I read how the ceremony was similar to a Native American peace pipe ceremony.  Where the indians would sit in a circle and smoke the peace pipe, people in a Yerba Mate ceremony congregate in a circle to enjoy the Mate and the company of others.  I'll be honest and tell you that there's a whole slew of health benefits that I am going to cut and paste below.  These were gathered so that I could make a short social media post about this tea.

Sure, I realize that this tea is healthy for many things.  It helps level out my attention deficit among many other things.  I drink it, because it makes me feel good.  This tea makes me high.  I'll admit it.  Once I sat down and steeped 3 or 4 glasses of hot tea in a row, I was lit.  This tea made me jolly, I felt great, and it's got like 10 times more health benefits than green tea.  I use to brew mine into sweet tea, and there's a special procedure for that.  You should give this tea a try.  You could fall in absolute love.

Cut and paste info about Yerba Mate from a previous article of mine (all pulled from cited sources and studies)

Could Drinking Tea Save Your Life?
Mighty Tea - The healthiest tea that you've probably never heard of
The Tea that Packs More Punch than Green Tea.
Yerba Mate and it's health benefits EXPLAINED -
- Stimulates and wakes mind without nervousness and jitters of coffee
- "whole body tonic"
- 196 active ("volatile") chemical compounds (144 same as green tea)
- 11 polyphenol phytochemicals (antioxidants)
- Saponins (stimulates immune system & protects against disease)
- more potent antioxidants than Vitamin C or butylated hydroxytoluene (1997 Biochemical and Molecular Biology International)
- Contribute to increase the antioxidant defense against free radicals attack (2000 March journal Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications)
- Highest Flavonoid and Caffeoyl derivatives than 6 other South American Species (2001 November “Filoterapia”)
- Potent Direct Qenchers of free radicals 1,1-dipheyl-2-picrylhydrazyl & rich source of polypheols and antioxidant properties comparable to green tea (2003 June Journal of Alternative Complimentary Medicine)
- Total Polyphenol Content (mmol quercetin equivalents per liter)
1 Yerba Mate – 6.5
2 Green Tea – 1.8
3 Black Tea – 1.13
- Comparison of Free Radical Quenching Activities (1x10^(-1) dilutions)
1 Yerba Mate – 75%
2 Green Tea – 35%
3 Black Tea – 2%
- henolic coumpounds were absorbed and promoted plasma and LDL protection against ex vivo lipid peroxidation. Mild but significant effect on antioxidant activity of plasma
- Vitamins: A, C, E, B1, B2, Niacin (B3), B5, B
- Complex Minerals: Calcium, Manganese, Iron, Selenium, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc
- Additional Compounds: Carotene, Fatty Acids, Chlorophyll, Flavonols, Polyphenols, Inositol, Trace Minerals, Antioxidants, Tannins, Pantothenic Acid and 15 Amino Acids.
- “All of the vitamins necessary to sustain life” (Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society)
- Pantothenic Acid “Rare to find a plant with so much of this significant and vital nutrient...indeed difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to mate in nutritional value” (Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society)
- Health Benefit of antioxidants in natural form – more beneficial than supplement with pills
- Anti Cancer – 65% inhibition of antitopoisomerase II activity versus 15% for green tea (2005 Journal of Agricultural and Food Science)
- Consumption of Flavonoids associated with prevention of age-related chronic conditions including cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Flavonoids have antitopoisomerase activity and can inhibit cell proliferation. Beneficial effect of tea polyphols against cancer at most stages of development (2005 Journal of Agricultural and Food Science)
- Inhibition of oral cancer cell proliferation – cytotoxicity against malignant oral carcinoma cells while causing little damage to normal or premalignant cells in the cancerous lesion (2005 Journal of Agricultural and Food Science)
- No connection between polyphenol levels and anti-cancer activity. Polyphenolic content (of different Mate samples) did not correlate with the degree of topoisomerase inhibition. This suggests the inhibition of topoisomerase and oral carcinoma cell proliferation may be due to the presence of other unidentified phytochemicals. This is a potential source of still unknown active substances that can be added to the arsenal of compounds that could be used in cancer prevention and treatment (2005 Journal of Agricultural and Food Science)
- Catechins – no EGCG contained – but has compounds that act similarly such as 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid – potent preoteasome inhibitor comparabile to EGCG
- Antioxidant, Anti-Inflammatory, Antimutagenic and Lipid-lowering activides – with evidence that seems to provide support for beneficial effects of drinking mate on chronic diseases with inflammatory components and lipid metabolism disorders (Borges MC, Vinolo MA)
- MAO inhibition – inhibiting monoamine oxidase activity by 40-50% in vitro, so it may be useful for treating a vareity of disorders such as depression, attention-focus-mood-emotional disorders, Parkinson's disease, hypertension, substance abuse, extrapyramidal disorders, eating disorders, withdrawal syndromse and the cessation of smoking. (2002 Patent and Study)
- Central Nervous System Stimulant
- Maintain Aerobic Breakdown of Carbs during exercise for long periods of time. More caories are burned thereby increasing cardiac efficiency and delaying the build up of lactic acid
- Helps Relieve Allergies – opens respiratory passages to overcome allergy symptoms. Reduces severity of some allergies and hay fever by stimulating the adrenal glands to produce corticosteroids – supressing the inflammation and immune response due to allergies (Page, Linda Rector N.D. Ph.D.)
- Weight Loss/Managment – used for years by physcians in Europe for obesity
- Rise in Proportion of Fat Oxidized: Study of available Plant preparations with anti-obesity claims – no significant increase in energy expenditure (EE) with any preparation, also no change in respiratory quotient (RQ) except after treatment with Yerba Mate indicating a rise in the proportion of fat oxidized. (1999 Swiss University)
- Yerba Mate, Guarana, Damiana (YGD) – significantly delayed gastric emptying, reducing the time to perceived gastric fullness and induced significant weight loss over 45 days. Maintenance treatment given in an uncontrolled context resulted in no further weight loss nor weight gain in the group as a whole. (2000 Charlottenlund Medical Center Denmark)
- “Promoted Weight Loss, attenuated the HFD-detrimental effects on adiposity and insulin sensitivity and decreased blood levesl of the inflammatory biomarkers.” Concluded that it reduces cardiometabolic risk markers (Sao Paolo University)
- Lower growth rate of adipose tissue, lower body weight gane and lower obesity in high fat diet fed mice (2012 study)
- Obesity and Diabetes- Mate affects food intake, resulting in higher energy expenditure, likely as a result of higher basal metabolism in mice. Reductions in serum cholesterol, serum triglycerides and glucose concentrations in mice that were fed a high fat diet. (2012 study)
- Improves Digestion – South American indians use to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as eupeptic and Choleretic agent.
- Increased bile flow and enhanced intestinal transit (Argentina, Catedra de Farmacologia , Buenos Aires)

- Diabetes – 2 to 2.5 times higher fold polyphenols that are capable of inhibiting advanced glycation end-products compared to Green Tea. Demonstrates a significant dose-dependent effect of Yerba Mate on AGE adducts formation where green trea displayed no significant effect . Inhibition of AGE formation was comparable to that obtained by using millimolar concentrations of the standard antiglycation agent aminoguanidine (2005 Touro University, California)
- Inhibition of Lipid Peroxidation – LDL oxidation is inhibited by extracts of Mate. Oxidation of LDL is considered to be the initiating factor to the onset of atherosclerosis (thickening and hardening of the arteries) (1995 Biochemical Molecular Biology International by Gugliucci)
- Inhibition of the Progression of Atherosclerosis in Cholesterol fed rabbits (2006 Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil)
- Bad Breath – polyphenols found in mate have been shown to prevent both the growth of bacteria responsible for bad breath and the bacteria's production of odorous compounds
- Parkinson's – hydroalcohol extract of Mate may have an antipoarkinsonian profile in animal models, probably through its antioxidant activity and antagonist action on adenosine A(2A) receptors.
- Oral Cavity Defense – produced significant increase in both secreted peroxidase and total peroxidase activity

I was going to try this in the past, but I haven't studied it enough to know which brand to buy or where to get it.  The main brand on Amazon has mixed reviews.  Thoughts?

I've been a regular daily drinker of loose leaf teas for about 15 years now and love it. I'll certainly give yerba mate a try!

Todd- I just looked and the place I get my loose tea from also has yerba mate: mountain rose herbs.

Todd, the guayaki brand is good. Some are dried over a fire, and others air dried. I think the air is called San Mateo blend. I get my tea cheap in bulk from frontier coop. I paid to be a whole seller through them, and save on nearly everything. It's cheap too, like five bucks iirc

Would have liked to try some, but unfortunately after a brief search I can't find any sellers offering less than $25-30/pound. If I order 20kg worth I might be able to get it for $15/pound, but I have no intentions of starting up a tea shop

Always amuses me how when anything goes north of the border, even something like dried leaves, the price goes up 150-200%.

Jarret, check out frontier, as I described in the comment just before your post. It's a very useful wholeseller account, for cheap.

I can't even make an online account with them - US only. It might even be that I need a canadian business so I can call in an order from them. Maybe I'll inquire sometime this winter.

William, I'm so glad you posted this...we drank yerba mate years ago and loved it.  Looking forward to having it around again.

I remember at the time we were buying it in bulk but no idea where...I'm thinking probably at the 'healthy food store' though, as we had no online options then and rarely got out of the valley where we lived.

William, thanks for sharing.

What do you think about the claims that it helps with weight loss?

Anne, I have zero doubt that this helps with weight loss. There's many things like insulin control and appetite suppression. Some models drink Yerba and smoke cigarettes as a weight loss trick

We just received our Adagio order of Argentine Yerba Mate.  I followed the directions on the bag (I bought a pound) which said 150 degrees F (66 C) for 3 to 5 minutes.  I thought that seemed kind of cool for the water?  cooler than green tea temps even?.  I ended up pouring at around 165 F and steeped six minutes.  We liked it, the flavor was subtle.  The tea looks lightly roasted if at all and certainly had plenty of caffeine.

Wondering what temps and length of steep others are using?  I found plenty of variation on line and next time I think I'll try for 165 to 175 F and still six minutes as we like a stronger flavor.  I suppose the hotter the water the fewer vitamins, etc?  I think B's at least are heat sensitive.

here's a link to one temperature guide... https://circleofdrink.com/yerba-mate-water-temperature

Adagio has an amazing selection of loose teas....too tempting thanks for the link Rick...

Judith, I will share my own brewing philosophy for Yerba.

Temperature is a huge part. Overly hot water can scald any tea. Starbucks knows nothing of tea, and serves the water scalding hot. I always get a glass of ice from them also. I only buy tea from there when someone requests a business meeting there. I don't know the temp, but I like it hot, but not too hot.

You don't need to focus on hot brewing either. In a humorous turn, Yerba drinkers from Chile order theirs with no hot water at all. They use a pitcher of ice water. Chile drinks it chilly.

Brewing questions vary based if you're drinking traditional out of a gourd, versus brewing a cup or pitcher. The gourd is much more concentrated of a dose, and is for much more veterans of the flavor, but I have also designed a way to brew for easy home use.

I love making sweet tea out of Yerba. The easiest way that I've found is using an iced tea machine. They are the type that you get from Walmart for twenty bucks, and is similar to coffee machine. You also need a few filters.

To brew in iced tea machine, take these steps. Fill the reservoir with normal water for brewing. Put a filter in and a few tablespoons of Yerba. I like 2 or 3 tablespoons.  Now brew your tea, but there's two things you need to watch for.

The filter can clog in the iced tea machine. It doesn't happen often, and the alternative is to buy Yerba tea bags or empty tea bags and fill with Yerba. Buying pounds of Yerba and using filters was the cheapest way for me. Sometimes I would have a small mess to clean up, but that was my money saving decision.

Second, when you brew this tea you will be able to watch some sort of chemistry happen. this tea brews a beautiful light tan color. As it sits on the counter, it darkens to a really ugly deep dark green. I figure that it has something to do with chlorophyll, but I don't know. To fully counteract this, squeeze some fresh lemon into the pitcher prior to brewing. It now can sit around, it will stay light tan, and keep much better.

Add sweetening if desired. With some practice, you can fool people thinking that if was normal sweet tea. As the chug it through the day, they will start feeling euphoric.

Enjoy the tea, and let me know if you feel any changes with your body or mood from drinking it.

I have no idea why you need such quantity, but Penn Herbs sells a pound for $13:

People who drink the tea in the traditional method need quite a bit.  It all depends on the size of your gourd.  The gourd gets filled up about three quarters of the way with the loose tea leaf.  This makes for a very strong tea in the beginning, but it also lasts dozens of fills.  Once you figure out the way to use the bombilla properly, it's also the easiest way of drinking the tea.  The key is shaking the gourd properly to create a filter with the leaves around the holes of the bombilla.  If done properly, you will hardly suck up any tea leaves at all..... it's really an artisan thing.  Since you're drinking at a much higher concentration, you are going through the leaves much quicker.

For anyone looking to try Yerba Mate, I suggest that you do NOT buy the traditional roast, but instead look for the San Mateo blend.  San Mateo is air dried, instead of dried over smoke.  For this reason, the San Mateo is much smoother and milder than the normal one.  I love it all.

I buy my yerba mate through my fronteir coop wholesale membership.  It's about 6.75 for a pound of traditional leaf, and just under 12 dollars for Organic Yerba Mate pound of leaf.  I really enjoy the fronteir membership, and it has paid for itself several times over.
