I probably don't remember most of the stupid things I do, but the other day I was preparing for a frost by carefully covering up a bunch of newly-sprouted seedlings in the garden with little mini-greenhouses made from clear plastic juice-bottles and produce containers. Went about some other tasks, and then half an hour later, had to back the truck up to add compost to a new bed nearby. Ended up driving over the first 3-4 feet of my carefully tended bed, crushing the seedlings and their mini-greenhouses deep into the soil. I literally got out of the truck saying "oh, you stupid, stupid idiot" out loud to myself as I assessed the damage.
A few weeks ago I went to pick up some 12' long gates about 30 minutes away, thinking I could just have them stick out the back of my truck and ratchet-strap them in. I did just that, even though the gates stuck out a ridiculous amount. I kept the tailgate closed, so the gates at least would be sticking up above car level, in case anyone didn't notice them and wanted to tailgate me. They were resting on the tailgate at about their halfway point. I noticed them bouncing a bit when I'd hit the bottoms of small hills on the way home, but they were strapped in really well and I wasn't worried. When we unloaded them, the bottom one was badly bent; a brand-new $200 gate. It still works, so of course we hung it, and now I have that ugly bent gate hanging there as a constant reminder of my stupidity. On the plus side, I did learn why long gates are usually transported in a trailer.
