The power of pooping birds.

So I was thinking, flowers attract pollinators, who attract predators, both attract birds, but birds poop, too. I don't know if it's a known thing among you guys, but I was thinking that if I could secure 10 birds foraging in my garden at every given hour and each of them pooped within that hour, and each dropping was 1g, and we considered a waking time of 12 hours, that would give me 120g of guano a day and 43.8Kg of guano/phosphorus a year!

Now, I don't know how much P is applied and to what an area, but it strikes me that when I "preach" about permaculture to people they react as if it's such a light-weight thing: "Sure, put some mulch. Sure attract the birds" but they just don't seem to think that far. They think that dumping 40Kg of P in the soil every year is gonna do it, but a few pooping birds it's just a fairy tale.

So, just that. Feedback welcome.

My garden has quite a healthy little bird population, and they enjoy perching on tomato cages.

What amazed me was when I realised the difference that pooping BEES make - just look at the difference in growth and green-ness outside the hive where they bees come out to poop.

That IS indeed more amazing.

not just the birds but the deer, rabbits, etc..

I have hundreds, maybe thousands of birds on my property pooping all over, but it was so much fun (yeah fun) to watch a deer eating my checker mallow and pooping all over my garden (actually watched it lift it's tail and poop and said, thank you)..

I actually allow a lot of checkermallow to reseed although it is quite aggressive, cause the deer do love it..and they do bring in a lot of manure to my garden for free..

not quite as thrilled about the bear scat I'm finding all over..but it also is free

Deer poo good. Bird poo good. Bee poo good. Bear poo, not so good!

I often get teased by the neighboring farmers about how much I covet poo. They always tell me I'm crazy for letting my chickens wander around my garden. "They gunna eat all them veggies you been plantin", is an oft heard phrase when they stop by to see what the crazy young feller's up to these days. Little do they know (even though I say so all the time) that my chickens earn the few veggies they eat by getting rid of the nasty bugs and turning them into fertilizer for me! (I don't, however, tell them about how little planting and work I do in my garden. I'm very much a "it'll take care of itself" kinda guy)

a lot of the birds and other animals that come to poo are coming from outside your property too. this helps brings balance in what gets taken out by harvesting what we eat.

we have hundreds of birds all through our garden on a daily basis. i wonder how much poo is actually getting dropped. oh well ill just continue to enjoy the birds.
