I'm posting here to report a problem specifically with my account, but perhaps a suggestion for a modification to your sites' response when it thinks it has discovered a "phony email address"

The response you offered when I attempted to log in did not give me the option to suggest that your settings might be bad and my address (which you thought was fallacious) was in fact the actual address I use day in and day out.

I double checked my junk mail list and saw nothing with a Permies.com ending, although I have noticed for some time that your site was having trouble notifying me about replies to posts , Pms, etc.

Anyway, I revived an unused account to use temporarily to post this, but  will be switching back to my normal email after I post this and see if that resets your servers or whatever it needs to reset so my valid , used everyday email address can be used for Permies.

Just saying, when you think someone is using a bogus email, you also need to provide some link where they can ask your computers to try again --or offer a different avenue for people to straighten it out who may only have one email address. Your message says that I gave an invalid email address, which was definitely not the case.

Hi bob,

As I can see from our logs, a lot of emails we sent to you in March this year have bounced back for "554 5.0.0 Service unavailable" errors. After receiving so many bounced emails, our system automatically flagged your email as invalid. Could it be possible that the email servers at @j***o.com were not up and running all time? If it helps, I can forward some of the bounced emails to you.

That said, I agree that our system should provide you a way to sort this out in case of a valid email. In fact, we will have that feature very soon.

For now, I can manually change the email address on your permies account back to the previous address, and see if our system can send emails without getting bounced. Does that sound like a good plan?

Hi, thanks for the very prompt and effective response.

I have already changed back to my original email address, went through the verification process and am getting responses from Permies re other posts (and this one) on the email thought to be bogus. but thanks for offering. whatever the problem was, starting over seems to have fixed it.

As to the emotional state of my email server I really don't know why it turned against Permies back then. As far as I know I was getting other emails at that time, so the problem seems to be somewhat unique to Permies, although it might be difficult to say for sure that every other email got through back then, like I said, I had noticed that normal notices from Permies were not coming through and I did drop a few threads and pms because of my distracted mind and the lack of notices-- I had checked my email settings on Permies and everything seemed to be correct at the time, but I figured it would straighten itself out---

I won't begin to try and solve this, my own web experience is very limited, but if there are any other details that might be helpful I'd be happy to supply them.
