Hi all,

I've been tinkering with the permies wiki and put up a chickens page in the Reference Section (We need to start somewhere, right?)

I'm looking for folks who can supply pics of chickens displaying any of the permaculture functions (eggs, meat, pest control, chicken tractor, etc.)
Attention file size at the moment is limited to 50K. Resize those giants!
Acceptable formats are .gif, .jpg and .png if I'm not mistaken...

We'll also have sub pages (at some stage as info is coming in) on chicken shelter needs, food needs and chicken breeds. I don't know the first thing about chickens myself

Comments can be left at the bottom of the wiki pages, or here in the relevant "wikipage: (page title)" threads...

If you have anything useful to contribute to make our wiki grow, it would be much appreciated!

Okay, so this thread has 40 views now and no replies (nor on the wiki), so I must be missing something?
Anybody need any help with anything?
Am I doing something wrong? Putting people off???
Let me know what's happening or what needs to happen...

Maybe it's the thought of having to figure out how the wiki works and then work out how to get our photos up there.  I must admit, I thought of uploading one earlier and then couldn't summon the energy to get my head around where to start.

If I post one here, maybe it will work it's way over somehow.  Or maybe it will remind me to figure it out later.  Or maybe it will encourage others to join in.

Here's a purple chicken hunting for ants!

Maybe a 'how-to' guide on the wiki home page would be a good thing to have ^^

Ah great! Now at least I know why things are not happening,

I put Burra Maluca's picture on the Chicken page, but I can't see Rob's one myself, or download it. Is it my browser? Is it because it's an attachment and Burra's is an inline image??? I seem to have that problem site wide (and I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot of brilliant pictures)

You mean my ace instructions were not sufficient???
I can write an uploading guide, but not one on how to resize pictures or reduce the number of bytes (Paul has set a maximum of 50K for the moment), that would get way to complicated and diverse, depending on people's software. Burra's picture for instance was 61K, and I had to do quite a bit of fiddling to get it "small" enough for the server to accept it... This kind of work is probably above and beyond the trouble an average forum member is willing to go through for the satisfaction of seeing their picture on the wiki?

I'm hoping a few more pics come in, see what sizes they are and maybe after a week or so will contact Paul to ask if he's willing to upgrade the limit somewhat. Or does anyone know of a nifty user friendly webtool that will reduces pictures to a certain size?

Rob, would you mind trying to upload you picture with the following instructions (and tell me where you get stuck if it doesn't work, might need some fine-tuning)
- go to the wiki, log in if necessary
- Scroll to the bottom of any page
- Hit the ATTACH FILE button
- Upload the file according to the instructions on the page (give it a meaningful name and the same extension that it has on your computer). If all goes well, it should appear on the  list of "existing uploads" immediately. I think it's one and the same list for the entire wiki...
- Navigate to the page where you want the picture to be displayed
- Scroll to the bottom of that page
- Hit the EDIT button
- Locate the place in the document where the picture should be inserted
- On a newly inserted blank line, write ATTACH: followed by the exact filename (including extension), for example "ATTACH:ChickenHuntingAnts.jpg"
- On a new line under that one write a caption, for instance "Purple chicken hunting ants, by Burra Maluca"
- Save, look at the result. Edit again if necessary

Gee, sounds very complicated written out, but it really is not.
If people try this and comment back with what doesn't work we'll eventually get to this "ace instructions" stage

Thanks all!

sorry, ive never used a wiki before!

I tried the instructions and apparently im an idiot, I uploaded 3 times. The first one was a fat finger submission, so it doesnt have the extension. The last 2, I tried .jpg and .jpeg...neither are working apparently?

I dont know how to delete the bad pictures though.

There has to be some sort of program or coding to use that can automatically do it for the user; A dialog box pops up saying "Your document is larger then 50K. Press OK to resize or Cancel".

Its great seeing a wiki being created with one of the greatest permaculture forums backing it.

I understand it is still in its "beta" phase, however it is not very user friendly. I get distracted from the moment I go to the wiki and almost overwhelmed by the way it is currently organized. Maybe creating a more friendly interface could help with the interaction on the wiki.

To be more detailed, the solution could be editing the layout of the information and cutting back on some wording throughout the pages. You could also look into choosing a new type of font, changing the font color, font size, or even font style.

The fixed column (for lack of a better way of explaining) on the left is nicely organized.

I hope the information I provided could be of help. I am so excited that you have made this page saskia. Thanks!

the wordiness: Are you talking about the new pages or about the existing wikipages which we incorporated (What is permaculture? and all the ones marked "old wiki?)

While I appreciate your feedback, Jason, I am focusing on structure right now and don't have too much time on my hands to play around with layout. I realize it is basic. If you feel up to it, create a page, preferably based on the proposed template in the "Survival Guide", develop a good pleasing layout for it, and propose it. If it is better than what we have, we will use it... All help is welcome.

Thanks,

No need to apologize! The step you got stuck on was the uploading?
- Could you locate the file on your computer using the BROWSE button?
- Did the correct filename with its extension appear in the left label?
- Did you retype a meaningful name + extension in the right label?
- Did you get an error message? If yes, which one?

No pictures were uploaded that I could see, so there's no need to delete anything?

Your computer might be set to hide certain popular extensions, that would complicate matters...

The wordiness doesn't appear to be the large issue, I feel as if it is more the font size, color, and style makes it appear to have more words than not.

I would love to accept your challenge, however I am a permaculture apprentice 25 hours a week, starting my own 2.25 acre permaculture farm, and manage a local tropical fruit business; I have no time for any other commitments.

Maybe someone else with more free time can hop on board and choose to use some of my suggestions.

Rob,

I saw you "attached" the picture correctly in the page, only it never got uploaded (it doesn't appear in the list), so we need to get that fixed for it to work...

The files I uploaded are still there. I can see them even from a different PC. And yes everything looked fine when I uploaded the second two. I put the code in the new line, but instead of a picture showing up it just shows the file name, and then my comment underneath looks fine.

When I'm on the chicken page and click on the attach file button, I see only the two files I uploaded. Is that where you see yours?

Is the filename EXACTLY as it appears on the list, including capitalization and stuff?

Not easy troubleshooting over a forum

Thanks for trying!!

I'm sorry that's my mistake, I thought there was only one "bucket" where all the pictures ended up, but apparently there are several. OK let me look into this (and update the instructions!!!)
Thanks for you feedback!

OK Rob, I got it solved by inserting "Main/" before the filename. The pic is up... Off to change the instructions...

No worries, Ill try and help out as much as I can. My perma setup is new so I can only share some minor experiences, and I dont want to pass any info off as fact.  I guess I wasn't clear on what other kind of chicken pictures you would need. I can take as many as you want really.

Ooh, we're still looking for A LOT of stuff!

  • [li]Any clear pictures of breeds or info on them can go on the Chicken Breeds subpage[/li]
[li]Housing pictures can go on the Chicken Shelter Needs subpage[/li]
[li]Any illustrations of chicken uses (chicken tractor, eggs, dressed chicken, ...) as mentioned on the Chickens page can go on that page under examples, or the more exotic stuff under "creative combinations"[/li]
[li]Anything not tested but you're dreaming about can go under the "possibilites and dreams" section.[/li]
[li]If anyone can do a rehaul of the chicken text (under WHAT) similar to what is on the Duck page, with an advantages/disadvantages list, that would be grand...[/li]
[li]All of the chicken subpages need a little introductory text, explaining what the subpage is about (under WHAT)[/li]

  • If you're not sure about modifying the text in the wiki page, you can always tinker with it here and invite comments from the rest of us. The best or final version can go on the actual page...

Everyone: Rob managed to upload an image (loud cheering). I would love for you all to find your best chicken mug shots and give it a try also (and please report if there are any snags!)
    Thanks!!!

    Yeah, beautiful! Thanks!
I did a minor text edit (please verify info is still correct?) and added some double backslashes at the end of your lines to force linebreaks (the editor doesn't automatically add them) because the caption and rest of the text all appeared as one paragraph.
