Wooden Spoon Day Half-Assed holiday

wooden spoon day - half day

- we all carve wood kitchen utensils
- maybe one cutting board
- make lots of soup that people eat with wooden spoons!
o make bread bowls for soup
- ice cream to test the strength of wooden spoons

A bit more insight on how to carve a spoon for this holiday: https://permies.com/t/2050/carving-wooden-spoon

The goal of this holiday is to carve a spoon worthy of using during the upcoming holiday meals. Please note that it really hard to carve a spoon for the first time but once you've mastered the art it's an especially rewarding skill to have!

Last year, the Wooden Spoon Day Half-assed holiday was celebrated on December 8th. Magdalene reported, "Who knew carving spoons would be so fun?"

Meanwhile, here is Dez' entry for Wooden Spoon Day:

If making your own wooden spoons sounds like fun, there's a PEP BB available: Carve a first-timer spoon - PEP BB roundwood.sand.spoonBBround wood woodworking - sand badge

Our very own Duke of Permaculture, Paul Wheaton, offered this thread on care of food grade wood stuff.

Maybe one day you'll be good enough to carve one of these!

Here's Daniel's post from 2022's Wooden spoon day!

After lunch we all got to work on carving our wooden spoons. We used saskatoon wood, which to my understanding is good to use because it is easy to shape when fresh and green, and then hardens well when it dries. I've heard that the process of carving a spoon is both meditative and rewarding, and that definitely proved to be true. I am very happy with how my spoon turned out, especially considering it was my first time making one. Big thanks to Grey for guiding me during the process. I'm hoping to be able to carve another now that I have a better idea of the process.

I actually did this yesterday without realizing it was a half-assed holiday!   I carved a nice, big serving spoon out of dogwood and made a pot of "Saint Francis of Assisi Lentil Soup"... mostly - I used smoked turkey broth and herbs to my taste instead of sticking to the recipe.  TASTY!

Sure - New serving spoon, Saint Francis soup and a curious hen.
