This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the wood badge in Rocket.

This BB requires you to start and operate a rocket mass heater for one month.

(source)

To get certified for this BB, you must heat a space with a RMH for one month and meet the following criteria:
- use two temperature logging thermometers (one indoor, one outdoors)
- at least 20 days the low temp outside got below 32 degrees F
- indoor temp was kept at least 65 degrees F, averaging at least 70 degrees F or more
- one month is 28 consecutive days

To get certified for this Badge Bit you must provide:
  - provide graphs of logs
     - take three data points (one at morning, noon, and evening) at about the same times each day
  - provide pics of the space being heated and the rocket mass heater
  - provide a twelve paragraphs about the experience

I'd like to plan a stay at Wheaton Labs spanning December and January to accomplish this BB. To be successful, I need to be sure that the "outdoor temp was always less than 40 degrees F". It's hard to plan dates around the unknown weather.

Referring to https://permies.com/p/1169928, the average high is 33degF and 36degF for December and January, respectively.

Looking at the historic daily highs from December 2023 and January 2024, there were only 27 consecutive days that would achieve the requirements of this BB. See December 29, 2023-January 24, 2024 within the two attachments below.

I have a few clarifying questions that would help me ascertain if the likelihood of success is high enough for me to plan to make this happen.
1) Is a month characterized by 4 weeks (28days) or a calendar month (ex: I start on the 5th of a month then end on the 4th of the following month)?
2) If the temp sensor goes above 39.99 degF, then the clock restarts at day 0?
3) If, during the month, there were 4 days that exceeded 39.99degF, could 4 additional, weather-compliant days (temps below 40degF) be added to the end such that the study ran for a total of 1month+4days?

Thank you!

Hi Alexandra, conversations happened and I think we have some clarity for you.  The top post has been slightly adjusted and hopefully clarifies a bit and answers your questions.  Ditto for the Straw BB for one week.  Thanks!
