This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP Curiculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Homesteading

In this Badge Bit you will add appropriate minnows/goldfish to an animal water trough.

Fish can help control algae and insect larva while taking care of the bits of food your animal likes to leave in the trough after drinking. Take care to prevent the spread of invasive species, and take care to meet the needs of your new fish for oxygen, shade, shelter, and space (no overcrowding).

A permies thread:

Some articles and a video on it:

To complete this BB minimum requirements are:
-add fish to animal water trough at least 30 gallons in size.

To document your completion of the BB, provide proof of the following as pics or video (less than two minutes):
-watering trough before adding fish showing size of trough.
-show starting water quality. (Hint: show scuzzy sides, bugs and junk that you've had to net out, submerge your hand or something light in color to show clarity)
-show adding the fish.
-brief explanation of your fish species and how their needs are met in the trough.
-show how water quality improved or stayed clean two weeks later.
I found some pretty shells, some sea glass and this lovely tiny ad:
