A step-by-step guide to building your own homestead root cellar.

If you are a DIY homesteader looking for a time-saving and practical solution to your food preservation needs, or if self-sufficiency is your goal, a homestead root cellar will help you get there!

Perhaps you grow more food than you can possibly preserve by canning, dehydrating, or freezing. Or maybe, like me, you don’t really like to spend your summer days over a hot pot of boiling water! Root cellaring is a traditional way of storing and preserving food through the winter that is safe, easy, and fun.

Looking for a food preservation solution for our off the grid homestead, we began building our homestead root cellar in the fall of 2015. By winter, we were successfully overwintering fruits and vegetables in the cellar. Since completing our homestead root cellar, we put up more food than ever – ferments, vegetables, apples, cheeses, cured meats – with less effort, time, and money.

As we built our own homestead root cellar, we documented each and every step, making note of what worked and what didn’t work, and assembling the step-by-step process into an easy to follow eBook that will help you build your own root cellar.

What’s inside the Building a Homestead Root Cellar eBook?

With over 50 pages of clear and detailed instruction and dozens of color photos, Building a Homestead Root Cellar eBook is organized into three sections:

  • In the first section, we’ll take a look at the basics of root cellaring. You will learn how root cellaring works, the optimal conditions for food storage, why root cellaring is such a valuable addition to your homestead, and some food that you can safely and easily store in your root cellar.
  • Next, we’ll talk about planning your root cellar, from size to siting to materials, and we’ll talk about some ways you can modify the design of our root cellar plan to meet your family’s needs.
  • And in the final section, we will walk you step-by-step through the process of how to build your root cellar into a hillside. We begin with excavation and laying a concrete foundation, and outline each and every step, all the way through covering your root cellar with earth to moderate the temperature. We’ve included dozens of color photos and illustrations so you can visualize each step of the building process.

  • Building a Homestead Root Cellar is available as an instant downloadable PDF eBook to be enjoyed on your phone, computer, or favorite eReader for only $8.95.

I know, you might be thinking that building a homestead root cellar is a big undertaking!

Yes, it can be, but we’ve made the process as simple as possible by documenting the step-by-step approach that we took to build our own concrete block, walk-out root cellar.

Armed with some basic building skills, you will create a structure that will transform your ability to preserve and store food (cheese cave, anyone?!?) and better yet, will last for generations.

Our root cellar is an invaluable part of our homestead that has empowered us to become more and more self-sufficient.
It was one of our best homestead investments and will become one of yours.

Hm.  I see your payment and I see it in your stuff.  Normally, you would be able to see a huge download link just above here, kinda like this:

Do you see such a link?

Yes, I see the big download link. I also got an email from Permies with the link. When I click, I get that "Ooops" message. I am logged in at the time I click, naturally.

I would love to get this sorted for you.  I need a bit more information to help.

For my clarity - when you are looking at this thread (not following the email) and you click the big download link, what is happening?  Is this showing you the "oops" screen?

Can you forward the email you are receiving to PA @ Permies.com, please?

I purchased this book last week, it shows up in My Stuff and that I paid 8.95 but I can't download it. When I scroll to the bottom I see the "Click Here To Download", When I click the button I get the message "Oooops. You don't have sufficient privileges to access this message". I see this is happening to others who have paid. Please someone fix this! Thank you.

Hi Ruth, and welcome to Permies as a poster.  The error you are getting is sometimes due to a conflict between your Cache and the download. If you go into your browser menu, click on history and clear browsing history and cache.
This fixed the problem for me when it happened.
    Best wishes

    Hi,
Following the suggestion that it is a browser cache issue, I tried with a different browser (one I never use for Permies) after first deleting all history, cookies, etc.
I still get the "Oops" message when I click on the Download link.
I checked the email about the purchase and it just links to this page.
Just to check, I went into My Stuff and tried downloading some other things I had bought in the past.
They work fine. So it seems to be just this ebook.

    John

I bought this book and had no trouble downloading it.  Raven had to help me the first time and now I have no problems.  I have Firefox as my browser and Duck Duck Go as the search engine.  There seems to be no issues.  I have configured Malwarebytes and Adblocker to accept Permies as a safe site.  Not being a particularly savvy techno-file, it took a while but now is working fine.
    Good luck with it all

I give this book 10 out of 10 acorns.  This book is a step by step guide to building a root cellar.  It is easy to follow and the pictures help with the understanding of the text.  This type of construction is robust and will double as a bunker if the weather turns to catastrophic.  The attention to detail is what is missing in a lot of similar books.  Building a root cellar is something that I have put off for 20 years but now, with this book in hand, the project has commenced.  It should be a valued and valuable part of every homesteaders reference library.  Congratulations Brian and Teri on both the book and the root cellar.

Hi, still can't download. Tried on Windows as well as Mac. Always get the same "Oooops. You don't have sufficient privileges to access this message". Maybe it's blocking non-US IP addresses?

Incidentally, I am able to download any of the other things in My Stuff, so it's not me, and it's not a general error with downloading from Permies.

We have verified your problem, and found that it is not to do with non-US IP addresses.  Hoping to have it fixed quickly, and will keep you updated here.  So sorry for the trouble!!!

We are still working out the kinks here, but rather than making you all wait for our tech stuff to get sorted out, I just made a new Digital Market listing for this item here:

    https://permies.com/wiki/208922/Building-Homestead-Root-Cellar-eBook

It will look identical to this thread, only you should be able to download the ebook.  Please give it a shot, and let me know if it works for you.

You probably just got an email giving you access to this new version.

Thanks everyone, for your help and patience!

Hey James, we've moved the product to a new thread, which you can find here: https://permies.com/wiki/208922
It looks identical to this thread. You may be able to download the book immediately from there.
If not, I will sort out access for you.

The original link should now work fine - we've been working on the original issue and it is now resolved, so please try again at the link above (and disregard the new link I sent you above). Thanks James!

I give this book 10 out of 10 acorns! While I wish that it had other types of building materials  and cellar styles depicted, I really TRULY appreciated how detailed this book was in explaining how to make the author's root cellar. I have another root cellar book, and it just gives me a few sketches of what to do, measurements, and some descriptive paragraphs. For a non-builder, this was not at ALL enough to give me the confidence to tackle making a root cellar.

I really love how this book gives pictures illustrating each step, and there's good written explanation for the how and why of different steps. They even showed how to make a door!

Another thing I really appreciated was the price break-down! So often there's no real detailing of how much the project will cost. I know prices fluctuate with supply and demand, as well as inflation, but just having this detailed "ballpark" price is supremely helpful to me!

All in all, I very much recommend this book for someone who wants to know how to build a concrete cellar, especially if you're someone who needs more than just building plans. This book doesn't claim to tell you how to use a root cellar or what foods to store and how to store them in a root cellar (though it does touch on those subjects), or how to build various types of cellars. But, it does say it will teach you how to make a root cellar, and it does that very well!
