Summary
part 2 of a 2 part podcast
Paul continues his consultation with John Tero
John lists some
trees he has, besides the conifers: some mulberry, sweetgum, yellow poplar and a few oaks.
Paul talks about how building a hugëlkultur close to, say, a mulberry tree is good: the tree will benefit from it.
John seems concerned not to lose too many trees, but Paul says he can plant more; apples, pecans,
black locust will fix nitrogen. He starts listing fruit trees, and then realizes that John lives in Georgia but has no peach trees, which he thought was obligatory. Also John could grow grape vines, and make an arbor over the log picnic table they already discussed. He further suggests using some big logs to make seats around a fire pit in another location along the path. Then John mentions that he has a fig tree, but it's overshadowed by other trees, at which Paul immediately says he hates those trees for shading the fig tree, they must be cut down so the fig can grow big and glorious.
John likes the idea of
perennial food crops and trees, and likes the idea of STUN
gardening.
There's mention of a wet area, which Paul likes and suggests making it into an official wetland spot, and he wants John to put up a sign reading Bog of Eternal Stench.
John likes the ideas being suggested but seems a little unsure about actually getting going on doing them. Paul points out that if he messes up, he can learn from that. Paul also suggests locating other permie types nearby and setting up a mini event to do blitz on John's plot. This is something which happens in some other places. John can provide pizza and maybe hire an excavator for the day as an added attraction. John also isn't against the idea of hiring someone to get the
project under way.
