Please join me in welcoming Dr. Sharol Tilgner, author of Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth

Read the book review here!

Dr. Sharol Tilgner will be hanging out in the forums until January 24th answering questions and sharing her experiences with you all.

At the end of the week, we'll make a drawing for 4 lucky winners to win a copy of her book! From now until Friday, all new posts in the Medicinal Herbs forum are eligible to win.

To win, you must use a name that follows our naming policy and you must have your email set up to receive the Daily-ish email. Higher quality posts are weighed more highly than posts that just say, "I want this book!"

The winners will be notified by Purple Moosage and must respond within 24 hours. Only the winners who respond within that timeframe will receive their book. Watch for a PM, and a notice in this thread announcing the winners!

Please remember that we favour perennial discussion.  The threads you start will last beyond the event.  You don't need to use Dr. Sharol Tilgner's name to get her attention. We like these threads to be accessible to everyone, and some people may not post their experiences if the thread is directed to the author alone.

Posts in this thread won't count as an entry to win the book, but please say "Hi!" to Dr. Sharol Tilgner and make her feel welcome!

Welcome to Permies, Sharol : )

Your book looks really good. I will try to think of some good questions to ask about herbs while you're here.

Hello Everyone,

I should warn you that the book listed above is not the new 3rd edition that was just released. It is the 2nd edition from ten years ago. The link to Amazon is also for the older book. I have notified Permies, and I am sure they will post the corrected book photo very soon, as well as the new link to Amazon or my website. Until then I will post a link where you can look at pages inside the book and get more details about it. There is also a link there to a 25% discount on the book. The link for the discount is good for ten days.  https://youarethehealer.org/book-store/herb-books-by-dr-sharol-tilgner/herbal-medicine-from-the-heart-of-the-earth/

Thank you and welcome Sheryl!  I'm sure we'll get the pic and link adjusted.  I just went to the amazon link and then found the 3rd edition on amazon and one thing that was really nice on the previous edition page is all the fantastic ratings and associated customer comments.  They made me very excited to pick up a copy of your book.  I'll start thinking of some good questions for you.  :)

Update:  Just ordered from your website...thank you for the sale pricing!

Hi Sharol! I got the image and link updated! Thank you!

I'll also double check to make sure the links and images are updated on the book review page (I also reviewed your book on Amazon, too. It looks like I might have accidentally  put it on the second edition. I'll see if I can add it to the third edition.)

Hello Greg,

Yes, the 2nd edition does have some nice reviews. I am really grateful when people review my book, as it helps others to decide if they too wish to invest in it. I look forward to interacting with everyone this week and thanks for the welcome.

Aloha Soul Sister!

The Gentle Gardener here! Thanks for creating a medicinal reference for the masses. Being one who was forced to take various pills as a child this information is priceless. Have been healing oneself and others with plants for almost a decade now with momentum building. Good job on following through with your goals and hope we all do the same.  â€œEveryone has a way to serve and serving everyone is the way“ -me-

Welcome Dr. Sharol! Your book sounds very interesting and I would love to read it. I've been trying to plant medicinal herbs as part of turning fruit trees planted on my land before I came, into poly cultures. Now I need to learn more about how to prepare and use those herbs. Always something new to learn.

Kudos Sharol!  Your book material appears very detailed and concise - a plus compared to most others that only skim topic briefly or info is very vague.  Look forward to seeing more.

Hi Bee Dee,

Regarding the books, I also have slightly damaged books (very slight) listed on my website for $15.00 along with photos so you can see example of damage. These are available as long as they last. You can find them here: https://youarethehealer.org/book-store/herb-books-by-dr-sharol-tilgner/

Hi Sharol!  Thank you for your work!  I live in the Willamette Valley area, as well - in between Molalla and Silverton.  Do you ever hold tours or classes on your farm?  I am in the planning stages of designing a greenhouse and food forest, as we just bought our property in February 2019.  I will enjoy looking through your website and hope to order a book soon.  Thanks again!

Hi Dr Tilgner and Permies! The tag "Herbal Medicine" in the daily-ish email caught my attention and I'm so glad it did! I recently finished a nutrition program and in its absence have started exploring the herbal medicine world. As we speak I have my first attempt at a muscle/joint rub with all kinds of wonderful medicines in it is sitting in a double boiler. I've been having a blast hanging out at the local herb shop and just talking to the owner. I'm casting my ballot for one of the book give aways because I'm super broke but would love to get my hands on one! And if I don't win I'll just cut back my grocery budget for the month and order one anyway, so either way I'm looking forward to diving deeper into the world of herbs.

The nutrition program I just finished really emphasized the use of references and published research to back up health claims, so I'm really interested a book about herbs that also contains lots of references.

Who knows...this could be my first step towards becoming an herbalist AND nutritionist!

Welcome Dr Tilgner and thank you for your work!!

Hello Dr Tilgner,
I've only recently joined permies and discovered a life style I've dreamed of.
Thank you very much for your work and I've ordered the 2nd edition and will buy the 1st and third too.
I'm a retired mechanical engineer having worked for a global pharmaceutical corporation. I've been battling congestive heart failure since 2002, but have given up all conventional meds and gone to suppilments and herbs.
I feel better now than I have in twenty years and devour anything that may help others or myself.
I studied Dr Andrew Weil and was intrigued about his studies, although I'm not going near Phoenix any time soon. I do have several of his books and they made sense to my analytical mind. I hope your books will expand them.
I moved off grid to northern Az and just finished my aquaphonic system. During the down times, I research many websites relating to energy efficiency and natural cures.
I hope to give seminars at some point rather than teach at the local college, and have sent links to many about permies and now your contact info.
I pray your books and info will let me grow my own and share with many.
Thank you again and have a prosperous new year.
      Respectfully,
    Charles Hugh Bryan

Hi Shelly,

I am not on the Pleasant Hill Farm any more. I was there 16 years and loved it, but it had some issues for me and I sold it and moved to Roseburg Oregon until I find a new country place. I won't be teaching classes again until I find a new place. I would never have sold my farm had I known we would have marijuana growers influx into the state buying small farms as well as a general influx of people into the state making it hard to find good small farms. It is taking a little longer for me to relocate than I expected. If people want to be in my class list, I have them send me an email to be notified when I start teaching again.

Hello Charles,

You don't need all the editions of "Herbal Medicine From The Heart Of The Earth". I would suggest the 3rd one as it has the most data and the most up to date data in it. I am glad you are feeling healthier.

Hi Dr. Tilgner, I've been a fan of your Wise Woman throat mist every winter for about five years! It's great to learn more about you and your work. I've only just started dabbling in making my own syrups, tinctures and salves, and it's been a lot of fun - I'm looking forward to seeing your book and learning more about it.

Welcome Dr Tilgner! Your books look very impressive. I have been dabbling with herbal medicine for 25 years and find most books on the market too elementary. Yours look so thorough and practical that I immediately put them on my gift list!  I am looking forward to seeing what you have to say in the forums this week. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Oh my goodness!  This might be the most excited I have ever been about a freebie!  I am a pediatric nurse, urban permaculture gardener and herbalist...who made a commitment to buy no books this year (to be clear, I already broke my commitment but I am trying again).  I have looked at your books Dr Tilgner, several times, but they have not made it to my shelf yet.  But I feel like one should be alongside Matthew Wood, Stephen Harod Buhner, Rosalee De La Foret, Ricoh Cech. Sajah Popham etc.  :)  Welcome here!!!

I have spent the last 2 years preparing 3/4 acre lot ( that is putting in ground cover) and mulching with wood chips about 40% and putting in 3 wood buried berms (not big enough

  Hello again Dr Tilgner,,
I've ordered the 3rd edition as per your recommendation and hope to gain much knowledge from it.
I really like this website as it reminds me of the Mother Earth news in the 70s. Just straight forward, good folks sharing learned info.
I'm thankful to have found this group and use as much as I can to make the planet a better place.

Hello Johanna,

I love the Throat Mist too. I don't know if it is the same as the original as I make my own products usually and have not theirs for years, but the original formula was great. By the way, the original formula is in my book on page 263.

Hello Cris,

I understand not buying more books. If it is  a lack of room or time to read, I can't help there, but if you don't want to spend the money, I do have some very slightly damaged books for $15.00 on my website bookstore. There is the 2nd edition of "Herbal Medicine From The Heart Of The Earth" and "Herbal ABC's" there. I will end up with damaged 3rd editions of "Herbal Medicine From The Heart Of The Earth" eventually and put them there too. The damage is super slight.
