I just saw a post where it was suggested that "nature doesn't have wood chippers". Rather than derail that thread, I figured it would be interesting to start of list of nature's wood chippers.
Here are two I'm quite familiar with:
I've seen wood chip piles from pileated wood peckers bigger than this one:
And our friends the beavers do a bit of chipping as well:
Not chips but... After I put together some book shelves from boards that had been stored outside in a shed, I noticed little domes of dust on some shelves. Took me a little to figure out that there were bugs in the boards that were drilling holes and making tiny little saw dust piles on the shelves below.
I've seen termites and carpenter ants impact similarly with old stumps and logs.
The wishbone never could replace the backbone.
