Neighbors:
Through many years of research fueled planning, it's finally time to build our forever home. As is so often the case, life has interesting twists and turns on the way to the final product. We've always planned to build a pole barn house, clad in metal for ease of construction, moderate cost and maintenance free for the most part.
In the current era (Spring 2021), we are experiencing lumber shortages and price spikes have forced us to rethink our plans.
The problem is the solution. We have over a hundred mature, Southern Yellow Pine
trees in the way of the house site and easily accessible to the road for ease of harvest and processing. We've always planned to harvest them, rather than dispose of them. Now we realize they're to be used for building the house.
We're in the market for a chainsaw mill and large Husquvarna to cut posts and beams. In consideration is a band saw mill to cut boards for siding.
Now the issue is talented labor. We live in a very remote, rural county in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains with a long history of building timber frame buildings, but the skill has been largely lost. Any ideas on how to find and recruit folks to help are greatly appreciated. We are community minded folks with a wonderful network of like minded neighbors, but the labor pool has largely been drained.
Enough rambling; I look forward to whatever the this forum has to say.
