In the heat, I have been spending more time in the house canning and decluttering.  My wife has been watching “Mystery Road”, an Australian based mystery.  It is pretty good….except.  It has a long range gunfight. One weapon was a .308. The other was something similar.  You see, when a weapon was fired by the bad guy who was some distance away, it made a loud bang …a second or two latter the bullet would strike a rock near the good guy.

Of course, bullets travel faster than the speed of sound.  So, the bullet should arrive before the sound.

Was it a .308 musket?

Cos then the sound could get there first...

Ugh. Kinda like those movies when actors will "throw" their bullets instead of pulling the trigger properly. Or pull the trigger when the barrel is aimed feet away from where the script claims the bullet will land.

Google says it is Australia Cutback Cattle Station.

What channel is she watching it on?  something I don't have?

Hi Anne,

I suspect it is BBC, but I will check and get back.

I suppose from the shooter's stand point, this would be true. Noise first, bullet lands second.

NB - bear in mind that Australia isn't generally a "gun culture"  and it could all depend on how the scenes were played out.  Focus on the shooter then cutting to the bad guy?  I can't remember just how it went.
Interesting that the scenery looks like Wyoming - I always think the outback is more like Arizona without the cacti. (Thanks John F. Dean for that snippet)

What kind of corn soldier are you? And don't say "kernel" - that's only for this tiny ad:
