How do you keep chickens and a garden working well together?

Hi everyone,
How do you manage chickens and a vegetable garden on the same small homestead?
I like the idea of using chicken manure and kitchen scraps, but I’m worried about chickens digging up mulch and destroying young plants.
Do you keep them completely separate, or rotate them through different areas?
What kind of fencing or setup has worked well for you without creating a lot of daily work?

Rotation is pretty much the only thing that's worked for me. Keep them completely off any growing beds, then once you've harvested a section, open it up and let them in. They scratch out the old roots and fertilise at the same time. Tight weld mesh around any beds you can't afford to lose, because they will find gaps in lighter fencing.

I keep my growing beds fenced off from the chickens.

They are too curious and too aggressive with their scratching to allow them to be around tender veggies. I put up 5 foot wire around the outside of the beds and put in a gate to limit access. I rotate pastures with portable netting from their coop/run so they have their own space to explore. They end up leaving the garden spaces alone. At the end of the growing season, I will open the gate and allow them to scratch/eat to their hearts delight before the snow is upon us.

On top of everything else mentioned, fresh chicken manure can burn plants and potentially act as a vector for illness if you are not careful. I make sure to compost mine prior to adding it to gardening spaces.

Another note. My bantams are more likely to challenge a fence because they are better at flying. My standard hens seem to respect the wire.

In the spirit of "good fences make good neighbors", we have a 5 foot tall perimeter fence around the garden to keep out deer, rabbits, and other large omni-/herbivores.....including chickens!  It's some solid work to put one in, but once in place and good gating added to allow access for people and equipment, it pays dividends in the end.

Chicken will not only destroy young plants but they will peck into all cucurbits, tomatoes, low hanging fruits (figs, grapes). They will keep eating swisschard and spinach and any other greens that they find palatable. One time they climbed my olive tree and they were visiting for few days until no olive fruit was left.
Some chicken will squeeze through 6x6" openings in the fence, but do it rarely. Smaller openings are safer.
When they go to my orchard they like to scratch around irrigated trees/bushes and they frequently disconnect the thin hoses from emitters.  If I don't spot it, a young grape or fig may not get directed water for three irrigation sessions and the plant will die.

I keep mine in the food forest until the end of the growing season then I let them in the garden most of the winter to tear everything up and  fertilize it. I shut them off the garden right before snow melt. (The food forest is against the garden.) I use allot of wood chips in the garden so I’m not worried about hot manure.

I am doing the opposite of the options given. I have a 24'x36' coop/run with 12x24 under roof and 3 sides on a 12x12 portion of the roofed part. The entire thing is fenced including the overhead area without the roof. I keep rabbits in hanging cages under the roof area and chickens below them. All on 12"-16" of deep bedding.

I close of a 12x24 section for broody hens to hatch eggs and raise the chicks at the time and season of broodiness. I have 2 6'x10' chicken tractors for broilers that I may incubate depending on broodiness.

I garden in raised beds and some on the ground. I use the deep litter for many, many things and it is really wonderful stuff. It is a tradeoff and I try to balance the animal welfare the best I can in the system. I plan to always have some layers in this system for the great benefit of the deep bedding.

I have to move the deep litter out and the greens in.

We don't have deer pressure due to our household being large and outside most of the day. Some of the household is very loud and so I guess it keeps the deer away. Everything is also very close or right up on the "house" we have. We do have a lot of predator pressure along with roaming dogs. That drove the initial setup that we have kept.

Thanks everyone, this has given me a lot to think about. I’m starting to see that keeping chickens out of active growing beds and letting them in after harvest is probably the easiest approach.
The points about strong fencing, protecting irrigation lines and composting the manure are especially useful. I also like the idea of rotating them through different sections instead of giving them access to the whole garden all the time.
For people who use rotation, do you normally have one permanent run with temporary sections, or move the whole chicken setup?

Due to high predation risks in my area, I have a stationary coop and secure run (sacrificial paddock) as a base of operations for my flock. I then utilize portable chicken netting to allow access to several paddocks that the rotate between. I have two separate doors to the run as well as a door to the coop which allows me more flexibility in changing zones. I like being on the property when the flock is allowed out into pasture so I can respond if there are any issues. Most of our predators are arial, but we have had a hunting dog come onto my property a couple of times and create a ruckus. Luckily, I haven't lost a hen yet to predation.
