I wonder if the lady in Quebec is able to get insurance while having a wood stove?

The season is short but the land is extremely cheap. Let's help each other grow food!

Eric G. : A Rocket Stove is a very special kind of stove, and a strong case can be made for classifying this as a Solid fuel fired Masonry Heater.

As such it is often possible to get a building permit for a home with a "Masonry Heater" Though acceptance varies widely from place to place.

Usually if a Dwelling gets an occupancy permit the insurers will usually fall into line ! Regular wood stoves installed to code are

generally easier to gain acceptance .

Thanks for the info. We used about 25 cords last year with electricity. This year in our 10km from the 49th parallel house we have two wood stoves and the house is much better insulated. I dream of the day when I can cook on my wood stove and use 3 cords a year of wood. wood is soft in the north. We will be able to survive with one stove and no electricity but for the worst nights. Wood heating is a way of life. Wood heat feels great but I have to admit my family unit of 6 gets it done nicely

The season is short but the land is extremely cheap. Let's help each other grow food!

When I applied for my building permit for my barn, I described the rocket mass heater I planned to install inside. I must have done a good job because they wrote "Rocket Mass Heater" right on the permit!

Called the agent who holds my home insurance and they won't insure a structure without anyone living on the property - which I don't yet. He said to call back once I move out there. I asked him about insuring a home with a rmh and he had never heard of them but was familiar with a masonry stove. Sounds like he would have to see it.

If I felt it was unsafe and I needed to be insured against something happening because of it, I don't think I would have built it in the first place.

Since I won't be living there this winter researching more about insurance is on hold until house construction is ready to start. I hope that will be this spring but I don't have all my ducks in a row yet. (We need a duck emoticon.)

Ernie got me considering solar hot water heat for the house so I'm trying to find more information on that. Anyone? Think I'll slide on over to that forum...

Val : I am very fond of the people at this site, while they help you understand the general process they do not dumb down the education process to the point that you could

potentially do something dangerous ! AND they watch the bottom line so that if you build a unit that is only 75% efficient it is only 1/2 the cost of a 85% efficient unit !

I second the endorsement of builditsolar.com. I would also recommend you look at a drainback system, as probably the lowest-complexity and safest active solar water heating method. If integrated into the house design from the start, you could even plumb it so that you can heat the water reservoir with your RMH when there is not enough sun.

Anything in Quebec must be legit, because it can get real cold here in Eastern Canada! I suppose the solar and geo-thermal helps, but in canada you really need that fire
If that is the only heater in the geo-thermal earth-ship, then I bet it works well

Good videos, I especially like her toilet seat blanket for winter lol. Cold toilet seats are no fun, are they? lol

John I recently toured an Adirondac hunting camp with an outdoor two-holer, but the actual toilet seats, a set of 4, were hanging in back of the wood stove;
