In my thread for feedback about trying another kickstarter to get out to The Lab, Judith Browning said about we need a "scholarship fund for earnestness".

My thought was to make a small thing set aside that people can donate to and the money will sit there until Paul or whoever nominates someone to give some money to as a boost to get out to The Lab or like possibly in my case trying to move there at least semi-permanently.

Is this something people would be interested in?

Maybe just a thread for people to make a post about themselves and their talents/interests. And then people wanting to help one of those people get out to The Lab can contact them via that thread.

...and I still agree with myself on that one.... that doesn't always happen

I know there are many views on this, but I think that in some cases a lack of funds doesn't need to get in the way of a step in a good direction. Some of us are just no good at making money but hell on wheels at making a life..........anyway I'll put my money where my mouth is and send $100 by old fashioned check if and when it is set up. good luck

Well before i go and undertake this right now. Maybe some ground rules you might want?

I would be making a seperate account for this.

Maybe Paul will see this and give his thoughts. After all it would be him giving the OK to people coming to The Lab. Maybe i keep an eye on this thread (or an "official" thread for this) and talk with, i think its Sam in charge of talking with people interested in visiting gappers etc. So i talk with him and we figure out hey this person seems great but could use like $200 to help with their gas/plane ticket/ whatever. And we send it to them. And hopefully they come out and are a good fit and help out tons at The Lab and maybe Gappers who turn out to be Deep Roots people.

I am sure theres stuff that will come up and need figured out. So give me your thoughts and ideas and i will put it into a guidelines post and see when i can open up an account for this.

Not to sidetrack too much, I thought that another variation might be as a 'sponsor' for an individual gapper or 'adopt a gapper' maybe?....or pay the upfront $100 for a gapper....or some kind of matching funds thing....and then a network of rides and places to stay on the way.

Send $100 to cover the gapper fee of someone. Gapper promises to email/ write letter/ post back here on permies about the visit/staying there.

* Adopt-A-Gapper 0.8
Promise to match (up to a certian amount??) money for a gapper to come out. Same promise as above.

* Donate to the Earnestness Fund
Just send me the money and i put it in the account. Money will be taken out as decided for varying amounts awarded to different gappers.

Kandence - remind me again the amount you were trying to raise to get to The Land? As I recall, it was the travelling that was causing some issues.

and one more variation.....for Adopt-A-Gapper, would be some kind of monthly help once there....it is amazing when you are living on not much how important $10 or $20 extra a month can be. I should maybe first have said that my husband and I are VERY low income, you would be amazed at what we live on

....and manage to save 20% out of all incoming money and still feel like we could help a little bit here....maybe because our sons haven't needed us to help them out in a longggggggggggggg time

....I think it would be good to have no strings attached and no expectations....it is OK to just give something, I think and not obligate the receiver.
I think the main thing would be that financial help be used to get to or to live at the Lab....if it was directly sponsoring someone though that could just be between the giver and the receiver and not set in stone.
I think for more folks to be comfortable giving to a 'scholarship' fund, it might have to be an 'official' fund set up at the Lab just for this....then your concerns about giving out your address would also be taken care of.

I recently was gifted a decent little chunk of money. I am going to put it in the bank. This will likely end up as my "gapper fund" chunk but in the meantime any interest on it will be for the Earnestness fund.
So if anyone is interested still later this week i should have things setup for paypal donations and can give interested people an address to send checks to.

And thank you so much! Things have gotten more than a bit crazy here and hadnt had a chance to respond. I have sent a response email to the gapper info email.

Wow! Just the other day I was thinking that it would be great if there were some sort of fund set up to support permaculture students while they are working on farms and learning, so they could devote all of their energy to their education instead of constantly trying to find ways to make money. This comes from my own experience wwoofing and traveling on a tight budget, some of it as a gapper. Here you all are putting it together! Keep up the awesome!

I am Daniel. I am trying to raise the rest of money to come live there. I know I would be a great fit. I have construction experience, knowledge of alternative building, I have tools and so many skills. I am willing to work hard and help. I just need a fresh start. Life in city has been hard. Please help me. I dont have a support group here, just my kids and a few friends. I have like $80 and will round up more in a few days. I was working but car died. I'm not at Wheaton Labs, but I have read some threads about things over there. I was wondering if your kids would be coming with you? From this thread (https://permies.com/t/labs-summary), Paul and Jocelyn talk about kids at the labs

I think bootcamp covers lodging for the adult who's in bootcamp, but not for children. A family could, perhaps, stay in a tent, but I'm thinking that wouldn't be recommended in the snow!

I know bootcamp provides the boot with healthy vegetarian food, but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't cover kids. So, a parent would need to buy their kids their own food, which might be hard. I know Wheaton Labs has ways to make some cash, but that might be really hard to do on top of bootcamp duties and caring for kids!

I don't know if anything I wrote applies to you and your family, but I figured I'd share some info. Sometimes it's hard to find info on such a huge site like permies, espeially when someone is new. I remember having a hard time when I first came to permies. There's just so much info here!
