This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEA curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Gardening.

Nothing beats fresh herbs for cooking, especially ones that lose their flavor easily after drying such as parsley or cilantro. Most herbs take minimal space to grow and can be kept on a window sill or table just about anywhere. Since they recover from small harvests, you gain a year-round seasoning kit. While the scale is a bit smaller than an herb spiral, the principles remain the same.

To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:
Must not be grown in plastic, cement, porous terracotta, or styrofoam pots containers
Must be started from seed
Must include at least 4 herbs, though they may be in different pots.
The herbs must be at least 2 inches tall or showing true leaves



DON’T spraypaint, but otherwise a useful video.


To document and become certified for this BB provide photos or video (less than 2 minutes) showing the following:
- Describe which herbs are being grown and some of your favorite uses for them
- Show the seeds being planted
- Show them after they have all sprouted
- Show them having grown to the required size

Would Kratky method hydroponics qualify here? I am guessing would need to come up with a non-plastic variation for the net cup in order to meet the spirit of the BB.

Here's my Table Herb Garden!
I used a glazed terracotta (ceramic) handmade bowl.
Seeds of: chives, chervil, dill, fennel, Alexanders.
More information with the photos:


What I used. Some seeds in packets I bought, others I collected myself.


Soil in the bowl, seeds sown.


Put  the 'Herb Garden' on the table. You see which date I started.


Some small herb plants are showing!


The 1st of November, Houseplant Day. Some of the plants are a little leggy. I decided to give them more light (a daylight lamp).


Today, November 9th, some herbs are doing well, others so-so. But I think it's okay for the BB. The chives are growing very well, the French chervil too. The other plants showing their first real leaves are either dill or fennel, or both (I can not see the difference ...).

Note: I can't tell if there's 4 species with true leaves, because they're all in the same family, but there's lots of babies with true leaves. Might be time to thin? Either way, I certify this!

Thank you Nicole for approving. You are right, I doubt too if there are three or four, or maybe even five species. I'll show a new photo when there's more to see (in a couple of months ...)

dill and fennel are able to hybridize with each other so I'm not surprised they look similar. (I couldn't get the quote button to work)

Hi Aurora. That's interesting. I didn't know. So now it's possible I have a new cultivar, something like 'fennill'?

Hi again.
Now my herbs have grown large enough to show the difference between fennel and dill. At least I can see it. It is a tiny thing at the base of the leaf stems, I can not (yet) get it clear on a photo. That's the official difference (as it's written in a book). When you know 'that one is fennel and that one is dill', you can see more differences ...

For you here I made a photo with arrows pointing at them. The yellow arrow at the right is pointing at the fennel, the grey arrow at the left at the dill.

leaf mustard, ciboulette, cilantro, basil. Ciboulette came out a bit anemic, don't know why, it was a fresh seed packet and I watered everything properly.
