Weird.

I was sure this was my all time worst podcast. Another record-in-the-car-by-myself thing. I even thought of flushing it and not putting it up at all.

And the positive responses have been huge. And awesome. Not only comments about how people feel like they are "one of the five" but also some food for thought that was new to me and really excellent! What started off as a feeble attempt to convey some challenging and awkward thoughts has turned into a powerful growth thing.

This podcast thing is turning out to be cooler than i thought!

Thanks everybody for the awesome feedback.

Podcast 111: Yes, this podcast was made for me. I am alone a lot by choice. Every person I know keeps the TV on for ‘noise’ when they are alone and they try not to be alone too much. What I see are people that would go along with any type of culture, value or belief system rather than be alone or be considered different.

Yes, it would be nice to have a bunch of peeps around that share my belief system but there are not. And the quality of ‘noise’ in my environment is important to me; the blithering idiocy of the crap that is spewed from all of the major news networks and television shows makes my brain hurt. I would rather be alone than expose myself to a constant stream of intellectual sewage.

I have been away from permies for a while but my first stop was to catch up on the podcasts – I was one of the “I have listened to every one” group. And yes, you and Jocelyn, are voices that I can identify with – by the way – Jocelyn, you have a very pleasant voice. Most of us don’t like the sound of our own voices and that is normal.

A guy sent me $60 as a form of thanks for this podcast. I have had two people send me money (less than $60) out of the blue with the message that they like my stuff, but this is the most and this time it is tied to a particular podcast.

The message was "more!" So I asked if it meant more like the stuff in 111? Yes!

I dunno - what would be some 11-esque things that I should cover?

Everyone wants something different. Personally I prefer to learn stuff that I can use/apply to what I am trying to do towards being self-sustaining: how to build better beds, what plants/weeds help other plants weeds, techniques in using/saving water, electricity, heat, food preservation and the like.

But….. an occasional rant or philosophical spin on “how did we get to be the weirdos that we are” is not a bad thing. As a matter of fact it helps me to remember that I am not the weirdo, they are – and I am not the sheeple – they are. And I do need that reminder now and then because, as Kermit said “it’s not easy being green”.

If you want the same results as everyone, be like everyone.

I heard a radio show a long time ago that said "If it isn't broke, break it anyway" At first I thought they were nuts, but then they explained, there are many things we accept because they aren't completely broke, but they are keeping you from moving forward. Sometimes we are afraid to mess with them, because then perhaps they won't work at all. To improve, you have to break out of patterns that might be sort of working, to create ones that are working optimally. (or at least better)

Great podcast,thank-you, I also appreciate your censorship. I've always wondered how people learn if no one holds them accountable.
11-esque suggestion (only) more on your thoughts of disease/disability and permiculture. Great stuff =) Fai

I am still working on listening to all your podcasts...I started listening when you were already 250+ so it is taking some time.

So much of what you were talking about with people getting in the way of genius reminded me so much of the "looters" from "Atlas Shrugged". I think the looters don't understand ownership of something that was produced by your mind or the mind of a genius and i think its from this lack of understanding that they think you should become their slave (I am not afraid of words I just choose to live a more evolved life). I think partly because they can't/won't produce and I think the other part is they are envious/jealous/feel inferior.

"I see looters every where and they don't even know they are looting"

I really do enjoy the homey feel of your podcasts (especially the interview after this podcast at the restaurant with the little kids).

I love what you said in this podcast, Paul, and I am of the same attitude that my values and my standards are not worth sacrificing for friendships- that it is more important to live by what I believe is good and right and decent.

And that's very hard (especially emotionally). And you are right, it is comforting to know that other people, like you, feel this way and will share their thoughts. And I, unfortunately, am finding that you probably are right that the majority of people feel that everyone else must believe the one crazy thought they have in their head or else they're going to berate you for it. And yeah, it probably was "nuture" that made Masanobu Fukuoka, Sepp Holzer, and Ianto Evans as "salty" as they are.

Thank you for speaking up, and thank you for making these podcasts. It does mean a lot to me.
