So im very close to starting to my rmh build in my ship. Devooruitgang (dutch for The Progression) a dutch arc from 1903. Back in the 1970' a previous owner added a diesel central heating system. It all works fine but im trying to be more sensitive to my footprint on the world. Plus i love building solutions and rmh.

Anyways. I have taped out the size of the bench. It comes next to a radiator.
I had a thought to take it away, and then i thought maybe it will act as more mass. If the bench surrounds the radiator it might warm from the mass of the bench and feed warm water to the other radiators distrubuted around the boat.

Am i dreaming or could this work
Let me know what you guys out there think

Hi Fraser,   What an interesting idea!  I have no idea whether it will work to heat up the water enough to transfer to other parts of the ship but can't see why it wouldn't work as a local mass.
If you intend to completely engulf it into the mass, it may be worth to cover it with something non flammable and at least a thin layer of cob to keep all the black soot off of it in case you change your mind and want to use it again as intended. Keep us posted with your progress.

Thanks for your responce.

This is the mock up build of the bench.
I will be using statifucatation method.

So i wont put the radiator in side the chamber but in contact with the mass.

I wonder also if there will be enough heat to get it flowing..
But even alittle would be great

if you are circulating with pump it should work fine to transfer some heat around if you want to run it via thermosiphon i think you would need to reverse the in and out piping

If both pipe connections are near the bottom of the radiator, it will never promote a thermosiphon from heating the radiator mass. Even if the outlet of the radiator was at the top, I doubt you would get enough flow to be useful. But while the circulating pump is running, the radiator would be constantly moving heat away into the rest of the loop.

As long as the internal temperature of that part of the bell cavity is never above 212F/100C while the pump is not running, I think you will be fine, and get some useful heat into the rest of the radiator system. How close is the radiator to the combustion core?

Ok sounds clear.
Boiler systems are new to me. Just curious what you think.

Can i run the diesel boiler pump without firing it up
Or do i need to add a second pump to the system to circulate the water.

Just at the beginning of installing bench. So let me know of you have thoughts
