Buying land in Europe - where?

Hi everyone,
If you can start from scratch and buy land in Europe... Which country would you choose?! I know it's a very personal decision also depending on where you are from. But I mean more like: "Don't go to xyz region because it's too dry and hot." Or "The area around xyz is very fertile" or "XYZ country offers great land deals and low taxes".

Hi Lissy! Depends on your budget. If you're low on dough go France or south or east east thereof. If you've got a good budget you can look more Northern.
It's all do-able i think in Europe as long as you adapt to nature and are clever with water and natural flows and as a person quite balanced. Basicly if you apply permaculture techniques to your land and are ready to put the work in it's possible to homestead everywhere.
But it's handy to have a look and feel in every country. Maybe WWOOF about Europe before deciding?
I'm in France, good climate, reasonable prices, fairly eco minded people, some great soils, some terrible.

If you're open to the ex-communist countries I believe Croatia to be the sweet spot. (I'm looking at it from neighboring Slovenia.)

The thing is that the most fertile land, the Slavonia part of Croatia (the northern "leg" of the tooth-shaped country) is being hollowed out demographically with young people moving abroad, following the money.

So land and houses became quite cheap; unusually so for a country that's a part of the EU and historically has been in the Western sphere of influence.

But there are many, many questions of what you consider acceptable or desirable, so this is just an idea off the top of my head.

When you say land do you mean bare land? It is very hard in most European countries to get a permit to build on bare land, so that is probably the first thing to look at.
