Hi Paul,

Thank you for this wonderful resource/platform you created.
I’ve been here for just a month, and got so much valuable information (and hopefully managed to provide some value in return).

I am looking for ways to connect to specific people on the forums, but can’t find the way to do it.

1. I would like to be able to search for people based on their country or region - is there a way to do that?
2. I would like to be able to attract certain people’s (when I know who they are) attention to a certain thread or post - is there a way to do that?

My questions/contributions are often region-specific (Mediterranean) and although I see here and there people from mediterranean climate zones - I don’t find a way to get their attention.
I hope this is in line with an older discussion about using Permies.com as a social media platform for permaculture enthusiasts...
As these 2 functions will allow us to create/follow/contact “friends” with shared interest/location/challenges...

Looking forward to hear from you...

And... thanks again... for everything.

Hi N;
I can't help you on idea #1 .
For idea #2) once you know an individual is in the area.  A purple moosage can be sent suggesting that they might like to check out a specific thread.

To the easiest way to do both of these is to find individuals who post in these two forum:

https://permies.com/f/140/Iberia

https://permies.com/f/226/mediterranean-climate

I don't want to name folks who I see posting there frequently so I would suggest reading recent threads in those forums and post a reply.  To me, that is a great way to get to know other members in your area.

I picked one thread from each forum as an example:

https://permies.com/t/156255/Mediterranean-Tree-Guilds

https://permies.com/t/155933/Spain

I hope this suggestion has been helpful.

This ought to help you, with #1 - the 'regional' button, on the left side of your page leads you to this: https://permies.com/c/3
From there, our regional group links are listed on the right.

Absolutely, Thomas... that’s what I do today.
However, I was wondering if there is (or can be created) an option from within a post to “shoutout” to a member, like in most social media platforms...

An @ function that sends an email to bring the thread to their attention would be great.

Thank you so much, Phil Grady, Anne Miller, Carla Burke for your suggestions.
When I’m looking for someone from a Mediterranean area I do go to the Mediterranean Climate forum (and thanks Anne for suggesting Iberia - which I wasn’t aware of)...

BUT...
The majority of people, I assume, as me too - do not check their local forum regularly (or ever)...
So posting there a post with “Hey, I’m looking to connect with people in the Mediterranean climate” - probably won’t get a lot of attention...

BUT #2...
I’ll never know until I try...
So... I will post later today a post in the Mediterranean Climate forum asking for people in this climate to “raise their hand” - and see if that would work.

Thanks for nudging me into action...

(PS. I still hope that the 2 functionalities I’m looking for could be implemented... as those are basic, valuable social media functionalities)

if you have pie there is an option for receiving an email when someone mentions a certain word or phrase.
Many of us have it set to our name so I am notified whenever the word 'Judith' is posted.  Usually that is me...sometimes it is the truck at the Lab though

and you can 'follow' members and receive an email when they post.  That option is at each person's profile page (upper right icon I think) and might be just for pie folks too but I'm not sure?

maybe one of these would help you to connect...

EDIT to add that the way to set a word or phrase does not require 'pie' like I thought.

Click on your name and then 'bookmarks and watches' and you will see a space to type in words or phrases to be notified of.

Fantastic suggestions, Judith.
I do have a few PIEs - so those are great options, which I had no idea about.
Thanks a million...

you are quite welcome!
the 'follow' option is easy to find but the word thing is an edit at your profile I believe? under pie options maybe?

whoops, I'm wrong N. Neta...the word thing isn't a pie option...I looked everywhere and then found it under 'bookmarks and watches' that is listed in the drop down menu when you click on your name in the upper right... I'll try to link to mine.  https://permies.com/forums/bookmarks/list/152940  so you can see what it looks like.

There is a place to type in the 'phrase' or 'word' that you want to watch.

You’re an angel, Judith.
Found it with your instructions, and already set a few “watches”.
Looking forward to see how it works.
Thank you so much for your support and care.
