Dug under coop walls where there was a gap in anti-dig wire, ate two of my 3 week old chicks, then took a big dump inside. First photo shows my hand and a trash can lid for size reference, second photo is extreme close up.

Moth wings, seeds, and the stem of a recently germinated plant, are the clearly identifiable objects in this scat. It's an opportunistic omnivore of some sort, the type that eats anything.

Skunks eat lots of bugs, but lack carnivorous tendencies. They typically don't eat anything larger than bugs, their bodies aren't built for taking on larger prey.

Maybe a racoon but I doubt it, racoons typically don't eat a lot of bugs, they're too big. Too much trouble to catch bugs, too little food.

Maybe a large rat is doing this?

Good insights. This animal was way bigger than a rat though. The scat was the width of my finger, and the hole it dug points to something cat sized as well.

Coon or Possum. I had a Possum dig into my coop and try dragging a hen out of the hen house a year or two ago. When I made it out there the shotgun took care of that. The hen survived with one eye, and is now sitting on eggs!

Possum, good thinking. That seems most likely to me.

It probably doesn't fit your landscape, but anywhere around here that scat would say "black bear." FWIW.

Thankfully there are no bears around here!! (And it wouldn't have fit into the coop without doing serious damage!)

I'm leaning more towards possum as well. They eat anything and they'll dig for it. That's just a lot of scat for one sitting from a possum, IMHO.
If you have a live trap set it so the critter has to go in to reach his hole or he has to go through it on the inside of your fence. It will be back.

it could also be a racoon.

Yes, of course, and I accept that blame. In fact, i covet that blame. As does this tiny ad:
