edited to add: i don't know how this thread got added to "rocket mass heaters" forum, sorry

hey all
wondering if anyone has come up with any innovations for a stove project that might be useful for multiple purposes. we are hoping to fulfill these applications:
  • heating a sauna and/or hot tub
  • smoking meat and fish
  • boil down maple sap without imparting too much smoke flavour

  • was hoping to DIY something that would serve at least two of these purposes, if anyone wants to brainstorm with me!

i've done sweat lodge ceremony before with some first nations friends and they heated up rocks in a fire and then brought them into a pit in the lodge and poured water over them, and i feel like it would not be difficult to do a similar idea for a steam sauna. however, i do not know much about building a smoker or a wood fired hot tub and in order to use it for the boiling of maple sap and not having smoke flavour, there should be a chamber where the fire is, where the smoke goes, and another space for wide burner where the sap could evaporate off.

i do not necessarily need these things to all be possible simultaneously. for example, i am not necessarily looking to take a hot tub while i make maple syrup and smoke salmon. however, if that's where it takes us, then so be it.

i have almost no logistics and a bunch of stuff swirling around in my brain and welcome anybody's ideas!

I could see a J tube rocket stove (sometimes called a rocket engine here on permies.com) that runs an evaporator and could be rearranged to do a sauna.

I built a smoker from some cinder blocks and a defunct furnace from a mobile home. I built a wooden front, stuck some stove racks in it and an old pan (for chips). Since it is off set, the fireside part needed a roof. So, I inlaid the bottom part of a stove on top of the fireside and, now, I can slowly cook stuff while smoking.
