This post is more of a reference for work with steel wire rope, like we use at Wheaton Labs for sunshade-hanging projects. I wanted an easily-found repository for links I'd been using for research and instruction.

Should anyone else have suggestions or valuable online resources for rigging with steel cable, please post here in this thread. Thanks!

Here's an info sheet detailing proper wire rope rigging loops with thimbles saddles, etc. along with the technical specs on torque needed to properly tighten saddles.

Here's another technical document at this link with useful diagrams for wrapping round coils and proper anchoring with saddles, and provides limited technical data.

Here' an instructional video that goes through step-by-step measurement and proper securement of saddles, turnback length, and techniques like a lap splice.

Here's another video that shows additional techniques for securing to posts, and uses different hardware like lag bolts instead of looping through holes drilled in posts.

I pulled coils of this stuff made of steel and stainless out of the scrap yard, very useful for all sorts of things besides putting in winches. one find I did have was a good size coil of steel wire cable that was at least 3/4" diameter and didn't really have a use for it or capability to manipulate it, sold it at auction. but the smaller diameter stuff, very nice. I went on eBay and bought a dozen or so of different size of those "u" bolt clamps and make loops at the ends. the cats meow would to have a way to swage ends on the way they make logging chokers and stuff.

Being a smart ass beats the alternative. This tiny ad knows what I'm talking about:
