gosh, we should start a thread with cool fungus pics! they have to be some of the most bizarre and beautiful wild things, and such incredible variety!

well inkycaps do that when they ripen..they melt into a gob of black inky crud

What kind of stump? Chaga is an interesting medicinal fungi species that grows mostly on weak or dead birch trees - it is a black gooey mess somewhat like what you show. Chaga was also important for to early fire monkeys as it makes a good tinder.
