Does anyone else out there have a Berkey Water system with a worn out filter? If so how are you running your system with the filter shortage? I'm not sure if there's a better thread to post this on...

Welcome to Permies!

Not necessarily having any answers but perhaps might be of use while trying to figure out a filter alternative. https://permies.com/t/204647/Refurbishing-Berkey-filter-charcoal-filter

I'll have to do some research, I didn't realize there was a shortage. I wonder the reason?

We have one.
Time to order filters over the summer and I did not know there was a shortage.

Ours last three years or more with scrubbing the filters every six months or so.

Thanks for the quick responses! Timothy, there's a complicated lawsuit stopping sales it seems. https://support.berkeywater.com/update-nmcl-court-case-vs-epa/
Judith, the few filters I can find out there are SO pricey. Be careful when shopping because I've heard of people buying counterfeits that aren't filtering well.

Hi Marie, I am curious.  What is the source of your water …tap, well, pond?

Has anyone found a source for replacement filters?
It appears Berkeys manufacturer will not have them anytime soon.

As the distributor Berkey seems as much in the dark as the rest of us.

The gravity filtration system I use is called AquaCera. Maybe their filters would be a suitable replacement for Berkey's?

Thank you Angel!
They look very similar...the fittings and all.
I thought I could write AquaCera and ask if they think one of their gravity flow filters would be compatable.

We are filterng municipal water that is from an old system that often calls for a boil order because of breaks in the line so we have used our Berkey for all of our cooking and drinking water since we moved here.

We use the Pro One filter system for out high iron well water and they work splendidly. They are interchangeable with Berkey filters and don’t need a separate filter for fluoride.

For what it's worth, this review says the Aquacera filters are interchangeable with Berkey's: "By the way, the AquaCera and Berkey filter elements are interchangeable, along with other similar systems like ProOne (formerly Propur) and Alexapure. Just make sure you have the right height filter to fit in the container."

I've been looking for replacement filters too. I found that Berkey is releasing new Berkey Phoenix filters!  Yaay!! They look good.
