I am in the process of setting up a community on my 300 acre farm in Northern Ontario and am looking for like minded people who are up to the challenge and are interested in organic farming, permaculture and off the grid living. I spend much of my time in Toronto but am working towards leaving the big city for good. If any of you are interested or have any questions then PM me or write to N.L.eco.community@mail.com

Hi there,

How far north are you talking here?

The reason I ask is because I have a few questions about legality stuff in the region.

I have a friend who owns some land and in typical Northern Ontario fashion, the land contains a sizeable piece of wetland / swamp. A lot of bog and a little open / shallow water.

My friend figures that if people around here can drain these areas without an issue then it shouldn't be a problem if he turns opens the swamp up and turns it into a small lake and develops a wetland area along the banks. Maybe even a chanapa type system.

Anyone care to comment based on actual knowledge of the regions environmental regulations?

I am in the other end of Northern Ontario, in the New Liskeard area. You can do almost anything in unorganized townships unless it violates federal or provincial laws. I know that there are laws about wetlands and your friend may get into trouble with this idea. It would be a good idea to check with the Ministry of Natural Resources about this. I know that many heavy equipment operators are paranoid about working too close to the water because of these laws.

I'm interested in learning more, my girlfriend and will be starting to develop a bush lot in the southern bruce peninsula over the next couple years, planning to live there full time within 5-10 years. So any chance to learn and practice the skills would be wonderful. I'm a jack of all trades with some experience in; framing, drywall, painting, roofing, flooring, as well as a wee bit in electrical and plumbing. I'm a very passionate gardener with a decent amount of experience but still lots to learn.

I am very interested on this, its been an obsession of mine for sometime, I've already emailed you however, I'd like to express my passion for this and northern Ontario lol I grew up around the tri-towns and it has always been home to me. I was planning my own homestead towards Charlton in fact, however, I'm sure some like minded people couldnt hurt, I look forward to hearing from you and I salute my fellow northerner!

I have been too busy working at the farm and also my full-time job to spend much time on line lately but I just wanted anyone who is interested to know that this project is still very much on the go. Members have been living on and visiting the farm this year and we have gotten much accomplished. If anyone is interested, you can e-mail me at N.L.eco.community@gmail.com for more information.
