I have so much free time that I have decided this year was the year for crocheting. Winter being the perfect time to stare at a pattern and replicate it. I am so grateful to YouTube creators like ExpresionFiberArts for the sweet pea shawl that I'm still working on in wool. Also Crochet swan for peaking my interest in Lace pattern using cotton yarn.

I hope that I can complete a full lace shawl in the end. Also finish my hand dyed brown wool sweet peas shawl. Just thought I would share since I still new to everything. Am I the only beginner who counts the chains out loud?

Welcome to the forums, Qu! Lovely work! And... yup, I still count my chains aloud, too.

(Side note - I'm super curious as to how to pronounce your name?)

Looks great.

I'm still getting the hang of knit/crochet work but I have a bigger appreciation for what people can create. My wife started learning when we got together and now a few years later it is almost mind-boggling her progress.

Keep sharing your projects as you make them.

It’s pronounced like the letter Q.

Thank you for the Support. I’ll post the full shawl when I’m done. Also I am a chameleon of sorts, I adapt pretty well to things that involve repetition and patterns. I look forward to seeing any of your projects.

Don't know if this will work. One of five pieces my wife entered in our local show last year.
First and second prize in two categories and best in show.

I give up. That one was a short video clip of the wifes Best In Show winner from last year. I gave up on that and tried to post four of her other show winning pieces but no good. I'll ask her to have a go later. She crochets every day. We have a "wool room"

My fondest hobby is collecting hobbies. To that end, one of the biggest rooms in our house is my craft room - which holds a LOT of wool & other plant and animal fibers, in various stages of processing, from raw, whole fleeces to batts, to both wet and dry felting projects, to some on various spindles & my wheel, to yarns, including purchased yarns. Like the op and your wife, I prefer to crochet, rather than knit (but I also enjoy nålbinding, weaving, and... ).

That lace pattern is nice and even - beautiful! I'm still a beginner at crochet, I never got the hang of it when I was younger but feel I could really learn to love it when I have the time to practice. I'm thinking of making some crochet snowflakes for decorations this winter

from girlswearbluetoo

They look small but intricate, so good for technique practice perhaps. I've got as far as sourcing some nice lightweight cotton yarn....

Wow! those are stunning! Those are a real labour of love!
I like the way that you can use lots of colours without tangling them all up like you I do with knitting though.

Nancy those look amazing. Great job on the lace snow flakes, I would personally hang those around my window to simulate snow since we dont get much so south in NY.

Jay those are amazing. Your wife is a true master for sure. Tell her I said she has a with crochet and colors like no other. Thank you for sharing those amazing projects with us 🤗

Oh no - I don't want to mislead - these are aspirational pictures, I haven't started on mine yet.
Yes hanging in the windows would be nice. I may use them in my shop decorations, I think I need something extra this year....although, since I haven't started them it will probably be next year now

Jay, those are GORGEOUS!! Thank you for not giving up on sharing them, and please tell your wife, too!

Nancy, I have a few of that type of snowflake, made by my mom,  in my Christmas decorations. They're lovely, wherever they end up being displayed!

Nice inspiration in this thread, thanks for sharing your beautiful works and aspirations!
Being a minimalist (except for too many yard tools), I really labor over the decision to take on a new hobby. I have very little space for supplies.
However, I would really love to learn to crochet sweater boots using flip flops for soles. Has anyone tried to crochet boots? I could really use a pair like the pair in this instructional Youtube series. Is this too difficult for a crochet beginner?

Hi Amy, if you follow a tutorial that clearly explains the process you should be fine.

Tips: It’s okay to start over with something over and over before you get it right. If you’re not understanding instructions look for a simplified explanation or come back to it after 1 full day. Just be patient with yourself. Sometimes us beginners get so upset if it’s not a mirror of the tutorial or that it took us too long. Biggest goal don’t give up and even if it takes a week or months it'll still be worth it.

I hope that helps.

I can't find it, right now, but SOMEWHERE,  I saw a photo of those crochet snowflakes with flatware through the holes, as part of winter place settings... if I can find it again, I'll share. But, my break is over and I need to get back to my Thanksgiving dinner prep, for tomorrow.

Thanks for the nice comments peoples. I'll pass them on to the wife. She has made hundreds of pieces- these were just the first four that came up on her phone. We have them on chairs, lounges, car seats, packed in wardrobes, cupboards, plastic tubs. Two of our little dogs sleep in a kennel made from a French oak wine barrel stood on end with an oval entrance cut in the side- the things Tereza crochets that she decides aren't good enough go to the dog kennel for a couple of months and then into the bin. She also gives a lot as gifts and donated (anonymously) quite a few to the nursing home where she worked before retiring. She also used to do a lot of wool spinning and dying but recently sold most of her spinning gear and her looms. She's struggling with painful arthritis in her hands and dreading the day when she can no longer crochet.

Ok, here's the link & a screen shot, so you don't have to open the link, if you don't want to. It's not the same one I saw before, but will give the idea:

There are exercises that can help. But, I can also say, from experience, keeping on using my hands helps more than anything. When I stop, my hands lock up, bad. I have 'trigger' fingers & thumbs, arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome - tell her don't stop...

Thanks Carla. Actually when she's trying to finish a big project she can't put it down and I have to try to convince her to take a break. The pain gets so bad that sometimes she sits with her hands under her chin and rocks back and forth. It hurts to watch. She makes little things like cushion covers and big things like bed spreads, but my favourites are little fine shawl type thingies in just a couple of colours. She rarely does them because they are simple repetitive stitches and don't challenge her. She is fluent in every type of crochet stitch.
One thing I'd like to mention is that Tereza also joined a little online group called Random Acts Of Crochet Kindness Australia. She makes little critters, santas, animals, gnomes- all kinds of things only a couple of inches high or less- they only take a few minutes to make. Adds little eyes or sparkles or whatever, puts them in little zip lock bags with a note saying something like I'm yours, please take me home and an email address. Has a bag of critters in the car and leaves them here and there- on a seat or under a car windshild wiper. Most people who find them don't comment, but some do and leave photos of their kids with them. Tereza volunteers at two museums- she has just stepped down as curator at one where she has been in the role for twenty years. Leaves a lot of little crocketed things at those which of course get picked up by passing tourists, and has received photos and nice messages from all over Australia and a couple from overseas. It makes her day when it happens  The group is also active in America I believe.

I absolutely agreed with Carla, your wife has a giant heart. Arthritis is a terrible thing but overworking herself for a passion is heartbreaking. I hope she can find a middle ground. Thank you for sharing about your lovely wife.

Thanks to everyone who's joined in on my post and created lovely conversation. You all seem very lovely.

I mentioned that my wife makes those little gifts not so much for the praise- which is really nice by the way- but to point out that there are things you can do with crochet that might not occur to you. There is an American group for you ladies
Tereza just left on a four hour drive to spend the weekend with two of her sisters. She's left me totally unsupervised until Monday. Just before leaving she said There's enough chicken and veges cooked and in the fridge to feed you for two nights- you'll have to find something for the other dinner. After she left I went for a wander around the farm and startled a rabbit which dived in between two stumps- I grabbed it and it's now dressed and on a plate in the fridge- dinner number three. I can no longer run, so to walk over and catch a wild rabbit left me rather bemused. I'm not complaining though- take your blessings where you find 'em.
