My work gloves work hard, and I burn them up.

There will be cuts and holes over time, and I bind them up with good ol' Canadian hockey tape. This extends their life for years.

But the time comes when the work surfaces can't be easily fixed. And yet with leather gloves, 75% of the leather is just fine.

How would you reuse old work gloves?

I have no ideas . . . but I've seen them used as door hinges on one of those homesteading in Alaska TV series.

A couple of things I have done with parts of old gloves:

- Quick sheath for a hatchet (just add tape)

- Heel sliders for work/hiking boots, where my knobby feet have worn away the cushion and lining (stitch to the top of the boot, and let the rest slide to stop friction, save my socks and prevent blisters)

- put a finger over the end of a rake handle or hoe, and tape it on at the base; helps prevent blisters and increase "gription"

There’s always a key thing to men who work with their hands that make so excited….. Reminds me of my Brother and Grandad so sad.
What do you build or fix though?

I see far too much waste, so I fix everything that is worth fixing. Many things can have a second life and can be made useful with a bit of effort and creativity.

Edit: This also has a cascade effect. An old glove repairs a boot, and saves a few socks, and keeps them all out of the landfill, and reduces mindless consumption. This makes sense to me. Why would I not try?

Your kinda right .. Not everything is worth fixing though. I wish the ones I loved had a second life but we all have to move on, you know…. Just wish people had more empathy and love in them.

Another trick I've learned: Sometimes I'll have two good leather gloves for one hand and no good match for the other hand. Turn one of them inside out, and voila you have a pair! Not pretty, but who cares?

A bit of a stretch here, but maybe old leather gloves could be used as pot handles or trivets?

For example, we have a bunch of casties (cast-iron pans) here at WL and they all have quilted handle covers. I'd imagine the cast-off thumb of an old pair of leather gloves might also help for this, after just a bit of customization.

Or stitch a couple bad gloves together, and when they lay flat you can set hot pans and pots on them.

Oooo, ah, that's how it starts. Later there's running and screaming and tiny ads.
