The most challenging part of any build is just getting started.
It has taken a year to accumulate the materials for this build.
Today, I mudded down the first layer of bricks for the inner bell of the new Studio Dragon.
She will utilize the same core that we used before, but in a new double-skin bell.

Hi Thomas, I think I spotted the first mistake. The exhaust box, for want of a better term, is too cramped, it should project at least half a brick further to the rear. As it is, there's no chance that the projected stove pipe could go straight up, the outer skin's thickness would prevent that. The picture of the dry stacked layout shows this very clearly.

It might be that the current stove pipe position allows it to go straight up. In that case, the whole of the inner skin should shift (at least) half a brick to the front.

Ha, day one and I've made the first mistake!
Thank you, Peter, for noticing.
I'm sure that after I had gone up several layers, I would have noticed... and then had to disassemble it all!
Having never built a double skin before, I do not feel too bad about this.
Thank Goodness, I have you looking over my shoulder!

Today, I finished the first layer of the outer bell and started working on the second layer of the inner bell.
Built a block-out for the location of my cleanout door.
I'm using pieces of my Solex roofing as spacers to maintain a consistent gap; they work much better than cardboard.

Interesting! I'd love to have a similar sculpture attached to my rmh. How do you plan to attach it to the outer skin?

I have small, round 12mm x 3mm rare earth magnets.
I'll epoxy them to the brick. With a double skin bell, it will not get hot enough to release the glue.
My Dragon is made from steel and will stick right on, as well as pop right off if I need it to.

Hi Tom, not applicable in your case but as a point of interest …. I used two small,  powerful magnets to hold open a door on my vortex J tube. I fixed the magnet to the door and let it stick to the barrel, worked perfect for about half an hour and then the magnet ‘de magnetised’  and the door fell shut!
I am guessing the heat (about 250c) must be responsible.
Being a bit gullible, I firstly assumed the magnet was a dud and replaced it with another one for only the exact same to happen again?

Today I welded up a frame for the core to sit on from 3/16" angle iron.
I'll add the feet when I know the exact height it needs to be.
