Summary

An Introduction to Twenty-First Century HOE FARMING: an antidote to globalisation is a 133 pages (roughly 6x8 inches), spiral bound book by Gareth Lewis about human-scale, human-powered farming using a few hand tools: a spade, a fork, sticks, an axe, a billhook, and especially a hoe. It's a light book, not delving deeply into any particular topic but surveying the history of subsistence agriculture, the economics, and how to make it work in the modern world.

Where to get it?

I give this book 10 out of 10 acorns!

This book is super-charming in writing and illustration and I love the focus on getting a real person in the real world into this very outside the mainstream lifestyle. It's a quick read and I wish there was more detail sometimes while at the same time, there's so much of their situation that's so different from mine (I mean climate and landform mostly) that more detail would just be frustrating if it wasn't written for my place specifically. (I guess I'll have to do that if I want it done.)

It's a quick read and I found it very inspirational. I'm really thinking about clearing up some land into 66-foot squares with banks between them just to see how that structure works for me.

(My individual scores are: thesis 5; structure 4; import 5; rare 5; electric 5; easy 5; interesting 5; voice 3; support 3; organized 3; graphic 4; actionable 4; instructive 4; Permie 5; JNSQ 4)

If you'd like to add your own review, please have the first sentence be "I give this _______ X out of 10 acorns."

I'm pleased you liked it Christopher, theirs is certainly a fresh and unique perspective!

If you seek more detail, here are videos of Samuel & Family with discussions, where you might be able to clean a bit more info:

For instance, I learned carrots in a long line might be preferable to a block (in the carrots section of his '24 garden tour)

I just watched the 30 Years of Homesteading in Europe video and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a hard sell, but I have to say: two thumbs up! This guy is authentic and practical. I believe I will watch it again. And all the others in due course. Thanks for posting!
